Life:Backstage w/ Sheila E.

Posted by Ms.Tris On August - 2 - 2010

Happy Monday All! I have a lot of work to do, and a short work week. I have sessions, headed to Ravens Training Camp, and my birthday is Sat.. woo hoo very exciting times over here….

I hope you all are taking advantage of Twitter and Facebook. Dave Koz, Johnathan Butler, and Sheila E did a show here on Friday. You all know I’m a huge supporter of Sheila E. By her being the 1st woman I know that played drums, she has inspired my career. When I was young she inspired my life as well. I wrote about this in my Elevate Hope Foundation Post.

Well I connected with her on FB and twitter sometime last year. I wasn’t sure if she even knew who I was, because we met me before I started using Ms.Tris Beats. I had planned to go to the show, and really hadn’t thought I’d be able to go backstage.
There is always a higher power working! I logged onto twitter early Friday, and offered to take her to lunch. She gave me an early birthday present….YUP! She invited me and my guests backstage!! Yaaay!

When we arrived security wouldn’t let us do anything before or during intermission.(Booo)… Everyone on the bill gave us more than our moneys worth for sure. It really touched me to see so many people just showing love to the performers.

I really tried to take as many pictures as I could with my little phone :( that was a big FAIL on my part. So many people had cameras in the venue, and I didn’t take mine…

Being as though she was a special guest, I wasn’t expecting to see her perform a lot of her material. To my surprise she did ” “Holly Rock”, and “Love Bizarre” during the 1st set before intermission.

The 1st time I saw Sheila E. perform live was at Blues Alley, a Jazz venue. It was more layed back than the Pier Six Pavillion here in Baltimore. I kept telling my friends I hope she performs “Glamorous Life”. I knew if she did, it would not be the Jazz version she did at Blues Alley….I probably said it 20 times that night..lol

Dave Koz and Jonathan Butler were awesome. I was not very familiar with latest material. They did such a great job, I’m gonna purchase their cd’s, and get to know them more. At the end of the show Dave introduced the band. Talk about a funky time, we were all dancing and clapping.

Sheila was not on stage, and I knew what was coming next. People were leaving, and Sheila returned to the stage. The crowd went wild. All of her fans went to the front, including me. I had to apologize to one guy lol, but that was the moment I had been waiting for. I was pumped when I heard the 1st three seconds of “Glamorous Life”…. She tore the house down with her playing!

I did attempt to get footage, my phone cam just would not focus with all the stage lights. I found a video which is pretty close to what we saw:

Okay the adrenaline was going… time to head back and talk to Sheila. Security was tight, but I sent the message to her, and they let us in. We waited about ten minutes, and Sheila came to see us. I had my own drumsticks with me for her to sign. She was like” Hey those aren’t my drumsticks..let me go get mine”…straight from the amazing show I got the sticks :)

Sheila E has a lot of love in Baltimore. When I walked around with those drumsticks, about 20 people literally begged me, even offered money for at least 1 stick WOW…

My peeps TRIED :( to take a picture of Sheila and I, right before we left…Booo hoo again! When I took the phone, all in a hurry I forgot to SAVE save 1st….My pic didn’t turn out, but hers did:
( sorry she didn’t want me to post her picture, so I just blurred her side lol)

We talked for a long time, then she had to get to the meet n greet with other fans. What a night! Sheila E. is a legendary artist. Sheila has played with just about every musician you have heard of this lifetime!

I consider her a mentor. I’ve followed her career for many years. One of the most cherished moments of the night is her giving me a compliment about my work. :) She told me she checked out the site, and likes the work I’m doing. Talk about fuel to my artistic fire! That really meant a lot to me. I feel so thankful today. Thanks again to “The E”…

Elevate Hope Foundation: Therapy Through Music And Art

Posted by Ms.Tris On April - 27 - 2009

How are all of you? It’s a beautiful Monday here on the east coast, almost like we skipped spring and went straight to summer :-)

I mentioned that I would be doing a write up on “Elevate Hope Foundation”. I have started this post about 3 times. I had to work through some tough memories, but finally my words can flow smoothly.

About Elevate Hope Foundation

ehfbanner

Mission: (used by permission from the official EHF website)

Elevate Hope Foundation (EHF) is dedicated to providing abused and abandoned children an alternative method of therapy through music and the arts, and funding special services and programs that assist the needs of these children using these fundamental methods.

Co-founded in 2001 by entertainer Sheila E. and business manager, Lynn Mabry, EHF supports existing programs of their beneficiaries through monetary funding and in-kind donations e.g. musical instruments, art supplies, and work stations complete with computers, keyboards and applicable instructional software.

Over 65 percent of our grant dollars will be invested at the local community level. Outside financial support fills a viable niche in light of more conservative funding offered by the federal government.

Foster care systems and outreach programs alike share the urgent demand for funding and unite in this strong commitment to serve the needs of disadvantaged children…..continue reading complete Mission, Challenge, and Solution

Testimonials & Mission

I am honored to present a foundation that I believe in. A lot of times we hear about different programs and become skeptical about helping. I can honestly say The Elevate Hope Foundation is built on spiritual values and lead by Love. Sheila E. has helped many children over the years. She treats her fans practically like family. Although EHF was not officially established at the time, my life was personally affected by Sheila’s movement. I will share some of my story with you:

Sheila E. Wins “Gone Country 3″ :-)

Posted by Ms.Tris On March - 13 - 2009

Happy Friday All!~ Today’s post is a mix of life and music for me. A big shout out to the talented Sheila E. She and her family have been an inspiration to me for along time.

Sheila won the third season of ” Gone Country”… what an amazing thing after all the years in the music business as a Latin/Pop and R&B artist…

You can help Sheila celebrate and get into rotation on CMT, by voting on her uplifting video “Glorious Train” : Top Twenty Countdown Viewers Poll (no registration required)

Here is the video for the winning song…

Sheila E. “Glorious Train”

…she takes it to church at the end… the song is sort of a mix of country and gospel actually :-)

Sheila has helped many throughout her career. Her latest movement is geared toward helping children. Elevate Hope Foundation (EHF) is a charity that provides abused and abandoned children an alternative method of therapy through music and the arts.

I will be doing a huge post about her “Elevate Hope” Foundation as soon as we can work out the details.

Here is thee video of her hit ” The Glamorous Life”.. although her career was well on the way, this was the official world wide introduction to Sheila E. in 1984! It’s been 25 years since Glamorous Life was released, how about we mention longevity… wow! Still doing her thing in a whole new genre.

Congratulations to Sheila E. and many blessings!

All About Drums

Posted by Ms.Tris On October - 28 - 2008

What’s up all..back at it with some cool videos. It’s all about drums today. Friday I mentioned how Swizz Beatz gets crazy with his drums, banging out on the Mpc. I just want to remind you to be creative with your rhythms. I like to chop up loops, add effects, and blend them in with the drums I either play out, or program.
I have also been a huge fan of one the greatest drummers ever, Sheila E.. She’s amazing on percussion and a full piece set up. She does a lot of Latin cadences even in her ” Pop” type songs. I often try to mix Latin percussion loops into hip hop rhythms, adding flange or phasers. Mixing techniques from different genres will help you make better drum patterns for hip hop.
