Good Morning All… Busy day today as usual. Next week I’m working on all eastcoast type hiphop. Yes I am back in the crates this weekend… I’ve seen a few videos showing samples that were used in top hiphop songs. Here are two cool ones with Kanyes sample choices..pretty cool I must say…It’s funny because I know I’ve made beats with about 20 of them lol…I didn’t catch them in some of Kanyes songs though.. enjoy
Is that a….**looking closer::..”hey it’s Micheal Jackson on the button!” I bet Kanye sampled Michael plenty when he first started making beats…

Good Morning To all.. Hope you had a nice weekend.
Just a little production update….This week it’s all about the beats. I have one site to design tomorrow, but the main focus is some major hard core Eastcoast Hip Hop.
All over the site I’ve done many tutorials on Fl Studio 8 and Reason. I haven’t quite started the mpc2500 tips because I really don’t use it as often as I should. I am finally in the mood ,and today I am preparing for tapping the pads. I bought a larger memory card, 2 gb, and eventually I will add a hard drive.
I will be doing a lot of sample based beats. The first step I am doing is going through some vinyl finding the hot samples to chop. I can’t tell you how to choose samples, but I will tell you I am going through some Soul and R&B songs produced in the seventies. A week ago I went digging and found some treausures…
All of these albums have been sampled heavily. Sometime I just like to challenge myself and see what I can make anyway. I always believe producers will chop samples differently, and that I will be able to make something different than whats been done. After I find the samples, I’ll chop them and make some Mpc programs. I love this software called ” Blue Box”. You can upload your samples and assign it to Mpc pads, then export it as a Mpc Program. Much easier than twisting on the data wheel and chopping inside the Mpc. A brief description:
BlueBox was developed to facilitate creating and editing programs for the Akai MPC1000. This solution automates some of the tedious tasks involved with creating programs using the MPC itself
This event was marvelous. The Baltimore Hip Hop scene is alive and jumping. I am happy to return and be greeted with great entertainment. You can get the full recap through The Baltimore Scene Blog.
Not only did I see a wonderful battle, I heard some classic hip hop and saw breakers!~….I’m wrapping up an R&B beat this morning, then designing a website. Today is busy busy…but the battle has me ready to bang out something on the Mpc, which reminds me I haven’t gone sample digging in a while….
Todays post… all about the crates some sample digging for ya Monday Morning ….
Sample Doc
This one explains a great deal about sample digging, and the whole vibe of it.
What’s up all…back at it with the screen recorders.. I’ve tried 2 so far. Here’s the third one, ” My Screen Recorder” and I think this one has knocked out the last one.
I’m making a beat today using Fl Slicer. This first video is the actual loop of the sample in Fl Studio. I loaded up an FPC, Fl Keys, Bass, and used the Fl Soundfont Player with “Cadenza Strings” Soundfont. The steps I took to make the sample=
I used an FPC midi loop for the drums to have a basic rhythm at 85 BPM
I played a chord progression A minor, G Major and F Major. Then I added a bassline, and some strings.
Now I have a loop to chop in the slicer. Here’s the loop for those who want to chop and make something with it…
and here’s how I am starting the actual beat…you’ll see me fiddle with the pitch, and even an idea for a bassline…and at the end I hit the sweet spot where I like the pitch of the sample…. this is pretty loud so adjust your monitors…
….hit me up with a link if you make something hot..:-)
So you want to make a beat using a chopped sample. There are several ways to go about doing this. Some producers may take a huge loop and add some drums, however this is not the way seasoned producers make hits. In some way or form you’ll have to chop the sample. What is chopping? Splitting the sample or loop into smaller sections to be loaded into your hardware or software sampler…This process allows greater control over arranging the sound waves, and leaves room for your creativity to blossom. Step 1
Find a ..**ahem**..royalty free sample … Load that into your editing software. If you are using a hardware sampler, the basic concept will apply, but you’ll have to work inside your machine. I use this method for both hardware and software because it’s more precise, and a lot faster.
I remember a time when Hiphop was a baby. Back then I had already decided that I wanted to be a star. With rap, that dream seemed one I was able to reach. I started rhyming at a young age. I always loved music and now, destiny had touched me on the shoulder.
I spent years writing notebook after notebook. Studying the great female emcees at the time. I practiced, I rhymed , I recorded songs..always striving to reach “The Industry”. That place never arrived the way I expected.
I had a producer who had his own home studio. We were on the way to that ^place. One day he decided that producing rap music wasn’t right for him. I was left without a producer, but I had something even bigger. I had music inside. I realize now; that year, was a turning point in my life.
Making a long story very short, I bought a small keyboard and began to tinker around. Along with every artist, I thought I made the hottest songs ever created by man kind..lol. One day I’m gonna share some of those lil recordings…
HipHop was flourishing as a full fledge genre. I could only play the keyboard by ear,but that never mattered. My favorite producers at the time Dr.Dre, Rza, Pete Rock,& Havoc all used samples. They were my teachers through sound. Almost every producer/beatmaker mimicked their styles until they created their own. I had no idea that it was against the law to sample. I bought an Asr 10 and started collecting material. I started doing what I heard the big producers do, take a song that you like and make a beat.Today I have over 1400
albums/vinyl.
Once I started to sample it became a lil more than just me making beats. It’s hard to describe, and I’m sure you’ve heard the term ” The Art Of Sampling”. Some will say what kind of art is in stealing other peoples music? I’d have to respond….” Do you think the average 17 yr old knows the laws of copyrights?” Speaking for myself I didn’t understand or know the laws until 5 yrs into my career. When I first heard about copyright infringement, I was told oh it’s okay to use 13 secs…So I sampled on.This was the main way to make Hiphop for many many years.
