How To Chop Samples In Logic: Just Blaze

Posted by Ms.Tris On November - 18 - 2010

Happy Happy Thursday! This time next week I will have my apron on being chef :) . I know… I know the post have been about once or twice a week. Sometimes I have to remind all that I’m producer first, artist, then blogger lol. I had so many beats to make and mix. This is always a great thing, but it doesn’t leave much time to post :-( .. thanks all who continue to support the site, knowing that I post as much as I can, when I can. Much love to you all for that.

I hadn’t seen this next little tutorial from Just Blaze. I love his production work. Here he gives a quick example of sample chopping using Logic. The techniques he does can most likely be achieved in any Daw that has a ‘slice ” function.

Cool the way he just sliced on the down beats…. I must try that in Reaper :)

The video was uploaded by top engineer Mike Chav. His site has mixing info, drum kits and more; www.mikechav.com. Be sure to visit when you have time to look around.

A lot of producers love Ableton. I’m such a fan of bright colorful software, that I couldn’t get into it for my lab. I have used it several times. It’s a powerful program once you learn the basics. The time stretching features are awesome.
I thought I’d add some videos on Ableton for those who use it frequently. I learned a lot more from them ..enjoy

Ask bboyspaz (Episode 1) Chopping samples & using them with a key/drum pad in Ableton
( I like this idea..answering questions with a video..hmnnn..might have to do some these myself ;-) )

Ask bboyspaz (Episode 3) Sampling using Ableton vs Peak

Check out more BBoy Spaz videos: Bboyspaz Youtube Channel

Use ableton live to chop samples like an mpc
You know I had to find out how this was done…It’s basically the same as using mute groups on the Mpc.

9th Wonder Chops It Up!

Posted by Ms.Tris Beats On September - 24 - 2009

Hey all.. what a busy week I’m having which is a wonderful thing. Last night I did an interview with Frannie Kelley producer from NPR Music. The photographer hired for the segment is Johnathan Hanson, who’s done work for The New York Times, USA Today and other major publications.

Talk about excited! This is national .. woo hoo. They are doing a piece about Females of Baltimore HipHop. I’ll keep you posted and let you know when it airs….

For all those who are waiting for comment replies, I’ll get to some tonight and the rest in the morning.

I’ve posted a lot on 9th Wonder. I guess that shows how much I like the classic hiphop soul beats he makes. Most of you know that 9th is Fl Studio power user. I heard that he’s extended his equipment and added the Mpc. This video is really cool because you actually get to see him using the mpc2500.

Happy Beat Making To All!~

Next Screen Recorder Test and A Free Sample To Chop

Posted by Ms.Tris On July - 14 - 2008

What’s up all…back at it with the screen recorders.. I’ve tried 2 so far. Here’s the third one, ” My Screen Recorder” and I think this one has knocked out the last one.

I’m making a beat today using Fl Slicer. This first video is the actual loop of the sample in Fl Studio. I loaded up an FPC, Fl Keys, Bass, and used the Fl Soundfont Player with “Cadenza Strings” Soundfont. The steps I took to make the sample=
I used an FPC midi loop for the drums to have a basic rhythm at 85 BPM
I played a chord progression A minor, G Major and F Major. Then I added a bassline, and some strings.

Now I have a loop to chop in the slicer. Here’s the loop for those who want to chop and make something with it…

and here’s how I am starting the actual beat…you’ll see me fiddle with the pitch, and even an idea for a bassline…and at the end I hit the sweet spot where I like the pitch of the sample…. this is pretty loud so adjust your monitors…

….hit me up with a link if you make something hot..:-)

How To Chop A Sample

Posted by Ms.Tris Beats On May - 22 - 2008

So you want to make a beat using a chopped sample. There are several ways to go about doing this. Some producers may take a huge loop and add some drums, however this is not the way seasoned producers make hits. In some way or form you’ll have to chop the sample. What is chopping? Splitting the sample or loop into smaller sections to be loaded into your hardware or software sampler…This process allows greater control over arranging the sound waves, and leaves room for your creativity to blossom.
Step 1
Find a ..**ahem**..royalty free sample :-) … Load that into your editing software. If you are using a hardware sampler, the basic concept will apply, but you’ll have to work inside your machine. I use this method for both hardware and software because it’s more precise, and a lot faster.
