Reaper Tutorials And Tips: Rewire and Midi To Reason

Posted by Ms.Tris On December - 2 - 2010

What’s good this afternoon? Have you been working on your mixes? I did a lot yesterday. Today I continued, and ran into a little wall. I was listening to a track and could hear one more synth in my head. I already knew which sound I wanted from the Malstrom in Reason. The problem is, I made the beat using Maschine inside Reaper. Now if I could just get that darn rewire to work ..lol I’d be on my way.

I am so glad I went searching the Reaper Resources . I found the best tutorial, and sat for a few hours this morning setting up a template. The best thing about this lesson is it shows you how to Rewire AND send MIDI between Reaper and Reason :) :) *yes double smiles for that *

The specific tutorial can be found here:

Tutorials For Reaper | Reason ReWired to Reaper | Track Template

I shall not tell you a lie… this took me a long time to really get it down. I worked through it, pausing the video after each step. Once I added a few modules in Reason and checked my recordings in Reaper, I did a few on my own. I am still working with a few tweaks, but now I can easily load a template and get started.

This really worked for me today. What I liked most is now I can record the entire beat inside Reason, then stream the audio into Reaper. This allows me to correct any midi inside Reason. I find this a bit easier than using Reapers midi editor.

The tutorial is from: http://tutorialsforreaper.com/. Like the name says it’s full of great Reaper videos. Stop by when you have a chance. I’m watching one more before I get back to work. Thanks again to tutorialsforreaper.com/.

Posted by Ms.Tris On June - 17 - 2009

Good Morning All! Hope your week is going smooth and the beats are flowing! I’m working on some big tracks today. Last night I made some starters with Reason 4.0. I am finally getting used to the new sequencer screen after doing the tutorials here.

I’ve noticed a lot of Industry producers are using software more and more. Reason is definitely one of my top choices. The more I learn it, the more I love it.

Let’s take a look at World Famous Dj MixMaster Mike. He discusses Reason in an interview 1st, then we get to see him using Reason 4.0 for a track..

Reason 4.0 Dirty South Tutorial 2: Part 3

Posted by Ms.Tris On June - 3 - 2009

Whats up with the pc and the Reason Tutorials?.. lol remember last time something happened to my pc also..

We stopped yesterday at
Step 6:Add melody

Keeping along with the steps taken in this tutorial I will work on my melody next. ** Chord progressions are free for everyone to use BUT MELODIES ARE NOT** Don’t copy anyones melodies without permission or you risk copyright infringement…

I add the melody using “NNXT-Syn Strings”. After I do an 8 bar melody, I change it for variation 9-16, then a dramatic change for hook 16-24.
I still need to adjust some notes, and mix.. at this point an artist could actually rap to this…

Added melody

and we’ll continue with…
Step 7:Add a Bassline:
Sometimes I will use the chords first note in the lowest octave for the bassline. For example: If I play chords Am G F Em I will add A,G, F, E in the lowest octave on my keyboard simultaneously with the chords.

Today I will play an additional bass line starting at bar 9-16 for the melody. For the hook bassline I copied the ‘hook chord progression” and erased the chords, leaving just the lower octave notes as I mentioned above.
*sorry the volume is low…had tech problems at this time**
Added bass line

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Here is a picture with suggested places to add changes:

Step 8: Add another melody or harmonic expression

Now I can add more creative ideas to the track. I like this part a lot. I usually improvise and play what I feel here. I also call this part” putting the stink on it” :-) …be creative but try not to over do it..today I will use ” Malstrom-Little Johnny Lead

Step 9:Begin to mix and add sound effects
Now that I have my composition almost complete I begin to do a quick mix.

I export each instrument into Reaper. I changed them to mono, added reverb on the strings, flanger on the synth, and eq + compression on the kicks.

After I got a decent mix,I added some cool sound effects to add more excitement to the overall movement.

sound-effects

Keep in mind there is plenty room for more in this composition. I could re arrange the melodies in the verses. I could make each verse have a different drum pattern. I could make variations in each hook… there are many possibilities for you when its time for arrangement.

I arrive at a decent composition with these elements:
1. Double time hihats
2. Drum pattern
3. Chord progressions for verses
4. Chord Progressions for hook
5. Variation on my drum patterns
6. Add a Melody
7. Add a Bassline
8. Add harmony line or another melody
9. Mix, Arrange, and add sound effects.

Propellerhead Reason: Malstrom Tweaks

Posted by Ms.Tris On April - 22 - 2009

Good morning all! Hope your week is going smooth.. I’m about to work on some crunk tracks this morning, and later some east coast beats.

malstrom

I’ve been asked many times about the synths I use for dirty south beats. I like a variety of sounds. I use vst plugins mentioned on the site, as well as the Alesis Micron. My absolute favorites are the Subtractor and Malstrom Graintable Synthesizers, both included with Reason.

When you get into them, they are awesome modules. I usually start with a preset and begin tweaking right away. Once I get a sound I like I save it as my own preset.

Here are a couple nice videos which pretty much sums up the knobs I twist on the Malstrom. This should get you making some original sounds in no time….Enjoy!

Propellerhead Reason: Redrum Tutorial

Posted by Ms.Tris Beats On August - 15 - 2008

Happy Friday To All… I feel like crate digging today, I’m going to mix an R&b beat, then hit the vinyl spots.

Yesterday’s tutorial was a beginners guide to starting a project in Reason. I found a great follow up which takes a closer look at the Redrum device.

The Redrum device is Propellerheads answer to a hardware drum module. It can be used with Reasons Refill banks and you can load your own wavs or other file types.

The video is from Music Pro Guides, be sure to book mark the channel and leave some comments let them know your thoughts…

Propellerhead Reason: Where To Begin

Posted by Ms.Tris On August - 14 - 2008

Happy Thursday to ya…Yesterday I was reminded of the first time I looked at Propellerheads Reason. As soon as I opened it I clicked “X” and went back to Fruityloops fast. Finally someone showed me how to get the thing going. Theres only one way to share that with you, those curious like I was, yet clueless on how to make it work.

The concept of Reason is quite awesome. When you see pictures of Industry Producers studios, you will see racks and racks of equipment which is connected to a huge SSL Mixing panel. The creators of Reason have copied this exact type of set up and placed it into a software program. Using Reason is like using a rack of modules and effects all connected to a mixer as pictured below:

Starting with Reason will be like connecting rack mounted hardware equipment. If you have used hardware, you will most likely configure Reason to your liking after a few uses. I will use the easiest automatic connection settings today, but there are hundreds of ways to manually wire the software.
To learn any software always refer to the help file. The help file will explain in depth how to start up. Here is a brief summary of what you will have to manually do for Reason.
