Music Radar: 16 Maschine Music Making Tips

Posted by Ms.Tris On January - 4 - 2012

Woo Weeeee! The east coast is freezing cold today…bundle up well if you venture out in it…

I just upgraded to Presonus Studio One 2. Last year I purchased the Presonus Firestudio to go with my HP Touchsmart computer. Studio One Artist version came free with it. I tinkered around with it, and really liked the workflow. I am getting better at mixing, but still not great yet. Studio One is by far the easiest DAW that delivers a great sound, when you have little knowledge of engineering. I still love Reaper, but after using Studio One to mix one of my last beats of 2011 I was super impressed with the out come.

The important things the Artist version was missing was the ability to use Maschine, Rewire, Fl Studio, and third party plugins. I got a little loot Christmas and noticed the upgrade was only $99.00 yaaay. I am installing all the new sounds right now. The upgrade is about 15gbs of extra soundsets, fx and loops. Instead of twiddling my thumbs while downloading..lol… Im going to organize my Maschine library, and import sounds into Maschine folders.

Native Instruments really stirred up things when they created Maschine. It’s becoming the go to tool for many beat makers. Music Radar has released an article with some decent tips when creating music with Maschine. I’ve included and excerpt and you can read the full article by clicking the link:

Cut out the middle man
To avoid problems when performing live with Maschine, disable any third party plug-ins you aren’t using for the show. You can even switch them all off and deselect Scan On Startup for instant boot-ups without the risk of a crash…

Picking up plug-ins
…But do make sure Maschine is set to scan for new plug-ins on your system. To be sure it will pick them up and avoid frustrating headaches in the future, run Maschine in standalone mode straight after installing a new plug-in

Native Instruments Maschine: How To Make VST Templates

Posted by Ms.Tris On February - 16 - 2011

Great Morning to ya! I’ve been rolling heavy with the production this week…working on music for 4 artist..busy busy..

I absolutely LOVE the new Maschine update. I have been working a lot faster with the addition of vst instruments inside the stand alone version.

I am still working out a few quick start up templates on my own. I found a video which pretty much sums up what I’ve been doing. It’s so much easier to start projects using templates. It really comes in handy when you need to load up general instruments like bass, keys, synths, etc.

Native Instruments Maschine 1.6 Custom VST Chains

I like the tutorial and his studio is awesome! lol Check out more videos from Matt at :mcsg27 youtube channel

Remember you can use templates in all your music production software.. Fl Studio, Reason etc. Have fun with it, but be sure to make templates that help you work smarter …

Ni Maschine Meets Progressive Hip Hop: Mr.Invisible

Posted by Ms.Tris On July - 16 - 2010

Hey Hey what’s good with you?… It’s Friiidaaay! Woo hoo.. but my weekend won’t start until later, I’m still over here working on a few things :)

You all know I am officially a “Maschine-Head”, it’s still fairly fresh on the scene, so there aren’t tons of videos out yet. Native Instruments released two yesterday. Both are from “Mr. Invisible” a progressive hip hop trio: Two emcees; Ill-use and Justin Aswell (both are producers), and a DJ; Marley. It’s my first time hearing about them so I’m gonna check them out on myspace in a few.

Mr.Invisible Jamming Live With Maschine

This is real cool… the tag team beat making is my favorite part… They are actually using two Maschine consoles for this shoot.

Native Instruments Maschine Tutorial 1: Work Flow

Posted by Ms.Tris On June - 2 - 2010

What’s Up All! Not as early as I would have liked to get started, but I’m feeling great. I’ll be online tomorrow morning for live help. I really didn’t know you all enjoyed the feature this much. :-) yaay! Thanks to all who have been participating, and being patient for answers. I will try to log on more for live help.

Also those who followed me on twitter and facebook, hit me up sometimes let’s network…

Unwrapping MASCHINE

I was talking with a “#teammaschine” user who frequents MsTrisMusic.Com. He sparked the fire for me to do my 1st Maschine Tutorial post. Shouts out to @MrIIXI for this one, and the term ” teammaschine” :-)

If you haven’t had the chance to meet Native Instruments Maschine, the following video will give you the basic idea of what the fuss is about:
NI Maschine: Introduction

I got my Maschine in March. I have been really inspired to work on beats with it. I think I told you I heard about Maschine, then watched a few videos before making a decision to dip into my Roland Fantom money, and purchase one. You can read my introduction to Maschine here: MsTrisMusic NI Maschine.

Out of the box it was easy to get started. If you have used Fl Studio, Reason, Mpc, or other Daws to make beats, Maschine has all the basic features: There is a piano roll, pattern mode, pad mode, step sequencer, and more. The thing that’s a little different is Maschine uses “Scenes” to set up your song. For me, that was the only “uh-oh” moment.

The suggested work flow is to make several patterns, then place them in scenes arranging them how you wish. Sounds easy enough, but when I sat down to make a complete song it took a little thought.

I finally figured out the best and fasted way for me to get started. This tutorial will deal with Maschine Stand Alone installation.( I will do another post later this month with full Reaper routing). I will be using all Maschine included sounds for tutorial purposes. This is not a beat making tutorial, but one showing my way of beat creating, and arranging on Maschine using patterns and scenes

I load up Maschine, and load a drumkit into “Group A (808 Southern Kit)”, and a few sounds into “Group B”;

Next I’ll start with a 8 bar melody or drums in pattern “A1″. The cool thing about Maschine is each kit has some preset patterns to get you working quickly. I like this particular pattern for the 808 Southern kit so I’ll use it to keep rolling with the tutorial. This pattern will go in “Scene 1″ :

808 drum pattern
This is 1/2 or 8 bars of verse 1.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Native Instruments Maschine

Posted by Ms.Tris On March - 22 - 2010

I was really saving up for the Roland Fantom G Workstation. During the time my site was down, my trusty Asr-10 would not boot. I have had that keyboard for over 10 years :-( . When change comes sometimes you just have to go with the flow. I decided to dip into my Fantom money and buy an Edirol Midi Controller, a new KRK Rokit 5 monitor to replace a broken one, and a motu usb midi interface.

Before going to Guitar Center, I stumbled upon a few videos on NI Maschine. I was interested in this, but never looked into it further. After two days of researching and reading. I was completely sold.

I began to think of all the possibilities. For 1 third of the price of a Fantom, I could use Maschine, and as many sounds as I have on my hard drive. I took a look around my studio and thought long and hard about my set up. Where am I going to put another piece of large hardware?

I have mentioned how much I enjoy using hardware and software together. I finally understand midi connections etc. I found out that I could use Maschine to control vst instruments in Reaper through proper midi settings. This was the cherry on top for me!

I purchased Maschine and I love it. I’ve only been able to work on music a couple days in two weeks. I made 3 beats using Maschine within those 2 days. It was real easy to get started, something I was hoping to achieve with the Fantom. The greatest thing for me is no delay when playing melodies in real time. The software can be controlled from the hardware unit, with basically no latency.

There are a few things that could be improved. Another plus is Native Instruments can improve Maschine by updating the software. expect many tutorials on Maschine here once I really get started :-)

Here are a few videos so you can see why I’m so excited:
