What’s good with you all today? Hope your week is going nicely. I’ve been out and about handling beat business this morning. Almost ready to get the work going for the day. I’ll be online for help until around 4pm… Hit me up..say hi and all that good stuff
I haven’t gotten into the FPC much since it was added to Fl Studio. Now that I have my hardware in sync, I wanted to use it for a few samples using the Mpc as a controller.
This is something that was right in front of my face lol. I had no idea I could send the pads to single mixer channels. Thanks to HipKnokerZ On Youtube, I finally have it set up. Now I can export the sounds from the FPC one by one. Hope this helps you as well.. FPCMixing
It’s all about the infamous fruit! Just as we get version 8 down, Image-Line has released Fl Studio 9. WOW! is what I have to say just from looking at the pictures:
I installed it this morning so I haven’t had a chance to really get into all the new features yet. It looks like an amazing update. Sure to be the best one yet!
I am already interested in the playlist additions. They have added a “Track View” which will allow you to use the playlist as a sequencer. This means Fl is becoming more and more like Reaper, Sonar, Cubase, and Protools. New Playlist

For those who knock Fl Studio I am sure this release will make you a believer!

There are many tutorials on earlier versions of Fl Studio that will give you a basic idea of how to get started. Version 9 has a lot of great additions. The following videos will help you understand earlier versions of the program thoroughly. This will make learning version 9 a breeze!
Ste1438 has some of the best tutorials for beginners. They are not short, and he really gets into the technical details. He also has the tutorials available for download for only .99 cents!
Here are Volumes 1 and 2 which explain the very basics. I suggest you watch, go to Ste1438 Youtube Channel, and follow through the rest of the 4 part series when you have time. FL Studio for Absolute Beginners 01(Downloadable)
FL Studio For Beginners 2:The Piano Roll(downloadable)
A little Update:
I may be changing the site design very soon. The theme I am using will not work with wordpress updates Boooo! lol. The updates are important for security purposes so I will have to do it in the near future..I am not sure if I ‘ll change the color scheme, but you may log on and see a completely different layout.
I wanted to start with interviews last month, but music, sessions, and much more came to the forefront. I can’t pinpoint when they will start, but I am still looking for more producers to feature if you are interested. Keep in mind I can’t feature everyone, but I will try to get to as many as I can.
Thanks all who have been helping me with broken links, and correcting mistakes. You are helping me run the site with comments and suggestions..much love 4 that!
Along my journey with Fl Studio, I have been eagerly trying to get a good clean mix straight from the program. With all the plugins included and the ability to add vsts, I am sure it can be done.
A lot of producers will tell you to export the instruments and mix in another DAW. I have even told you the same. Although this is true, I am still on my quest to perfect a song completely inside Fl ..
The best way to perfect anything is to learn as much as you can about it 1st. Next you will have to put that knowledge to work. I asked myself ” Do you really know all you can about Fl Studio?” the answer was a quick “No”.
Since my main focus is mixing at this time, the first thing I need to learn thoroughly is the Fl Mixer. I found two videos that explain the mixer clearly. Both are by:Felas212. He has a great youtube channel. I will feature more of his Fl videos , but feel free to check them out. Let him know www.mstrismusic.com sent you… Intro To Fl Mixer
Mixing and Routing
I’ve never explained how I commit what I learn from the videos to memory. This may help others, so here’s what I do….
1st. I have Fl Studio open, I will watch the videos, pause and try the techniques right away.
2nd I repeat the techniques a few times with out the video
3rd I’ll go back a few days later and try the technique again from memory
I was rolling yesterday…just having fun making soulful beats. I chopped a Dione Warwick song into about 50 slices and used Fl Slicer to make the beat. By default all of the slices load, but they don’t start at the lowest octave on my midi controller which happens to be my ASR10. I have been trying to find out how to fix this for a while. Finally I opened the help file which I always suggest and I found exactly what I needed.
I manually adjusted the slices to each key on the Asr10. It’s pretty easy. I’ll explain then add a pictures: 1st: hit the desired slice inside Fl Slicer ie: “Dione Slice1″
2nd: hit your midi controller key/note where you’d like “Dione slice1″ to be
3rd: select “last hit” in the Fl Slicer menu
I can wipe my brow now..imagine how can you re arrange your slices,placing them across the keyboard in any order you wish! Niiice deal on my end….
Check out NFX’s full slicer tutorial for more tips and tricks….
Back at it with part 2 of Friday’s tutorial. By request I’m including the flp, the sample, and zip yaaay… I made the sample this morning using the slayer,fl keys, and orchestra string soundfonts.
I have my sample loaded into the Fl Slicer, I changed the pitch, and played a nice sequence into pattern 2 which I have named “sample verse1″
I go to pattern 4 which I named “snare” and added some snares on beat with the sample. Next..I moved to pattern 3, and played some kicks using my midi controller. I now have 4 patterns..
1=Hihats
2=sample verse1
3= snare 1
4= kick
They make a decent beat starter that sounds like this:

* 64 bit plugin support – The Wrapper now automatically detects 64 bit plugins and opens them in 64 Bit ‘Bridged’ mode (see below).
* ‘New pattern’ (+) button – On the Channel Window / Step Sequencer. Add a Pattern and open the naming window.
* Small scrollbars in editors – Smaller scrollbar for the Piano roll, Event Editor, Playlist etc. See F10 > General Settings.
* Horizontal zoom – Improved Playlist, Piano roll & Event Editor.
* Improved memory management – Two changes have been made to lower demands on FL Studio’s memory allocation. 1. 32 & 64 Bit VST plugins can be
opened in ‘Bridged’ mode. The maximum memory available to the plugin will be at least 2 Gb for 32 Bit Windows and up to 192 Gb depending on your
version of 64 Bit Windows. 2. Audio Clips & Sampler Channels Keep on disk option now opens the sample in a separate memory allocation. Each Audio
Clip / Sampler Channel can now load a sample of at least 2 Gb for 32 Bit & 64 Bit Windows versions.
* Improved audio options – ASIO: ‘Mix in bufferswitch’ and ‘Triple buffer’ may improve performance with some ASIO drivers. ASIO/Primary Sound: Revised
‘Playback tracking’ options to help with alignment of visual & recorded events where soundcard problems exist.
* Autosave / Autobackup – FL Studio can now be set to back up the current project at 5 to 15 minute intervals. Never lose project data again!
* FL Studio Fruity Edition – Now gains access to Playlist Pattern Clips for unlimited scoring and automation flexibility.
I want to have some fun this evening and do a basic Dirty South Style Beat Tutorial. I’m not doing this to go over the top with all the brass and progressions…. I’m doing a basic beat for tutorial purposes. It may help new producers or anyone whos new to Fl Studio….
I am using Fl Studio version 8. I have saved a template for my default start up containing a kick, hat,snare, and clap. I load that up and make a
basic drum pattern.
I am using a 16/4 Grid because its easier for me to do breaks when I work with 8 bar patterns. In Dirty South Beats you’ll notice the Hi Hats are usually twice the tempo of the actual beat. This can easily be achieved in Fl Studio. I started this tutorial at 143 Bpms, which will sound like 71.5 once we spread the kick and snare as pictured above. I right click the hat channel and select “Fill each 2 steps”, place a kick on the 1, 7, and 13, next I add a snare on 9, and 25 active steps/squares. Next I repeat the same pattern again to fill my 16/4 Grid. Now I have the “overused” basic pattern for a Dirty South Beat…..
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
I have a foundation for a quick melody line. Here is where I begin to tweak my kick using * NFX’s tip… Read the rest of this entry »
