Free Drums Sounds, Soundfonts, and Flps: FlStudioMusic.Com

Posted by Ms.Tris On August - 3 - 2010

Hey all I haven’t posted links to free stuff in a little minute..

A lot of you asked me to post Flp (Fl Studio project files) when I do tutorials. I use so many vst instruments that I rarely add FLP files. I was thinking they wouldn’t work the same as when I made the beat, if I didn’t include the vsti.

I found a site with a bunch of Flp files, drum sounds, soundfonts, and more:

www.flstudiomusic.com

I just went through a few categories, but looks like the site has plenty downloads that are free..enjoy ..

Fl Studio 9.1: Club Banger Tutorial Part 1

Posted by Ms.Tris On May - 5 - 2010

Hey Hey Hey! :-) It’s a beautiful day with all the sun. It’s Wednesday already, the week is flying by for me. I am looking forward to the weekend because my family is big on holidays of any kind lol.

There is something about Spring, Summer, sun, and fun that makes me want to make happy beats. I am sure you’ve heard the term Club Banger lately. I usually ask the artist what type of beat do you need? 90% answer ” I need a Big Club Banger!”.

There are many options when creating a track that will go over well in any club. You can start any where you want when creating them as well. Some may say it’s all about the tempo and rhythm, some may say the chorus/hook is the key. Other folks may say it’s all about the melody.

I think it’s a combination of the above. If I’m sitting down to make a club banger, I follow a little mental template:
The tempo has to be fast enough to make people want to hit the dance floor. Above 90 bpm is a must..
The hook must be catchy and easy to remember.
The melody must be simple and one that will make people say ” I can’t get that song out of my head ” :-)

Next you’ll have to think of the type of club banger you are making. I find in today’s hip hop, most club bangers are a mix of dirty south, r&b and pop.

Let’s listen to a snippet from Ciara’s “G Is For A Girl (A-Z)” produced by The Y’s and Justin Timberlake:

Really catchy, danceable, nice tempo.. Ciaras club songs are always fit for dancing. This tracks uses a consistent melody through out, with added synths, percussion, fx, piano, and bassline when the hook comes in. It’s a real simple concept, once you get an idea of how to start, you’ll be able to make these in no time.

So how do I go about creating something similar?….

I’ll start by finding the tempo. I select a small loop using my sound editor program, save it,and insert it into a Fl Studio sampler channel..

I’ve chosen part of the hook. It’s has almost all the sounds used, including added percussion etc.

I use the “detect tempo” function to find approximate BPM/tempo:

G is For Girl is 93-94. From here I could start with a melody, the drums, a bassline, or a nice orchestra hit. If you’ve been following my tutorials, you know I like to start with drums. For my beats, the drums are important and I like them to have a certain feel before I start the rest of the track. When I do club bangers, the drums don’t have to be as elaborate, so I’ll let the melody to drive the song.

I add a simple hi hat, nice clap, and Kick to pattern #1. ( for tutorial purposes only, I’m using the same basic pattern that’s used commercially for club type hip hop tracks did, I will change this for final beat) and begin working on my main or “lead” melody.

A while back Flstudio.image-line.com started a new tutorial series by The Fl Studio Guru. He gives tons of tips that are quick and to the point. With this release he’s done a nice video featuring the top ten additions:

It’s all about the infamous fruit! Just as we get version 8 down, Image-Line has released Fl Studio 9. WOW! is what I have to say just from looking at the pictures:

I installed it this morning so I haven’t had a chance to really get into all the new features yet.  It looks like an amazing update.  Sure to be the best one yet!

I am already interested in the playlist additions. They have added a “Track View” which will allow you to use the playlist as a sequencer. This means Fl is becoming more and more like Reaper, Sonar, Cubase, and Protools.

Slicex Tips and Help Files

Posted by Ms.Tris On April - 1 - 2009

What are you up to today? I’m about to get rolling with my 1st beat of the morning. I did fiddle around with the slicex yesterday, after watching the videos. Now I see the huge difference between the slicer and slicex.

There are many additions in slicex like the ability to add fx to each slice. This is is just one out of about 50 things I noticed right away. Another great option is being able to load two samples at once. My mind got to churning on this one.

Let’s say you have filtered a bassline from some funky soul sample but it’s all muffled. You load that in deck A. You could add a good clean bass sample over top using deck B. Then replay your bassline using your midi keyboard or draw it in on the piano roll.

I am actually super excited about this plugin now. I also remember the key reason I closed the slicex before, about 3 months ago. I couldn’t figure out how to make the samples “play til end” like the Fl Slicer does. This is a technique that I love.

What it does is allow you to trigger a sample start from your slice marker, and play the sample all the way through until the end. This way you can “play” your slices like an instrument without sudden stops, as well as select the sample end point in real time.

I had to google this, because I have the slicex open and ready to roll!~ Guess what?… the answer was in the HELP file…lol Image line didn’t make this as easy as it is on the old slicer. You have to run a script. The directions are listed under ” Quick Start” here:http://flstudio.image-line.com/help/html/plugins/Slicex.htm. Click through for more help on Slicex. I’ll be posting some tutorials on it soon. Always remember, ” The Help File is your friend”….

Wish me luck, I am off to see if I can get this to work….

Free Beat Today…See It Come Together

Posted by Ms.Tris On March - 21 - 2009

Wasn’t supposed to post until Monday…I woke up feeling great and wanted to try something different..
I’m making a Dirty South download for all my emcees that support…I will update this post as I go along..bare with me lol I’m trying to make it happen by noon EST….
1st Step:9:52am
I added some hihats and a snare140 Bpm, the snare are really placed at 70 bpm..check the pic
and snippet:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

be back in a few with more :-)
2nd Step 10: 20 am: I changed the snare to one from my “Mighty Drum Kit. Added 3 kicks and combined to one channel or layered 3 kicks. I added and FPC and selected a random loop then used the Love Philter to put the Ms.Tris ‘stank” on it :-) ..I might change this all later…oh I also changed the tempo to 149bpm..

Made the over used dirty south drum pattern lol with a little twist:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

it may take me a little longer than noon because I’m doing this post as I go…stay tuned..brb

Step 3. Added A G E chord progression Using an organ vst around 10:45 ish am..
Next I added a simple Chord Progression using A G E triad chords. I added a flanger and chorus.. so I created a fresh sounding organ..nobody has this lol. Many producers have asked me where do I get my synths sounds. I use a lot of vsts, micron, motif or Reason… then added effects to make it
different…

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

brb…now time for the melody.. I have to zone out for a bit until something touches me… Read the rest of this entry »

Fl Studio 8 Tutorial:Kick Tweaking 1 Basics (with files)

Posted by Ms.Tris On March - 3 - 2009

What’s up all.. it is super cold here on the eastcoast..bundle up well if you have to go out!~

I had a wonderful time at the battle last Thursday. The final round beats went well. I am offering the winner the one he had the victory over, and I sold one of the others..great! The third I’m uploading for a free download..(please read agreement). I didn’t have time to mix them like I wanted. Which would involve ” tracking each instrument out and doing a final mix in Reaper“. I did try..lol… a few times actually, but winded up going back to the origional versions. I just wasn’t feeling the mix, maybe I was rushing who knows. The kicks were still knocking hard over the club system. A couple producers came up and asked me “What are you using now?” You all know I use both software and hardware..but the beats I played that night, 1 was straight from Fl Studio rough mix and the other 2 straight from the mpc2500 rough mix. No one knew which one came from what…lol what is your guess??

.. which leads us to today’s tutorial :-)

I must make this statement: I normally don’t use stock sounds. In order to make it easy to follow tutorials, I try to use sounds that everyone should have with the program. This way it’s easy for everyone to do hands on work when going through the tutorials using the same sounds…cool

As a pre production method you will want your kicks to knock as hard as possible within your workstation or software. Quality sound samples are the best way to go. I’ve done a few post on knocking kicks, this one will break down my method in Fl Studio using stock sounds. Once you get the hang of it you’ll find it works well on most kicks that need help…

1st Step: Make a basic drum pattern using stock sounds from Fl Studio HipHop pack:

Hip_Kick_8
Hip_Kick_7
Hip_snare_3
Hip_Hat_5

Basic pattern; Kick Snare Hat 90 Bpm No effect on Kick

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.
