A lot of people have asked me how to time stretch in Fl Studio. Time stretching changes the speed of an audio file with out affecting the pitch. This technique is used heavily in hiphop for sampled beats.

There are many software editors that have the function such as Adobe Audition. Fl Studio developers have made it fairly easy, adding a few presets to get you started. I must note that Fl Studio Slicer will also do time stretching, between the two I think this way is easier if you are just getting into it.

I’ve been practicing some nice chord progressions from this book:

“Funk Keyboards The Complete Method” By Gail Johnson

I’ve had it for a while and now that I know a little more, the progressions sound better. I’m getting my ” old school funk ” on. All I need to add is a full sounding drum rhythm.

I rarely use the FPC. After watching a few videos I will incorporate it often. Check out the tutorial I’ll be trying as soon as I’m done posting. He’s making a rock pattern. I’m going to branch off and make it a hip hop/ funk pattern instead.

You can use this technique in any style of music, play around with it and make up some fills. Be creative try adding some effects like flangers and phasers.

In this tutorial I will show how I use the pattern and song mode in Fl Studio.

There are many options available. I always try to find a way that works smooth. If you are building your beats pattern by pattern, I suggest naming them as you add them. Also name your sampler channels when you add them as well.

I explained before that I use a 16/4 grid when programming or playing a drum pattern. To set Fl Studio to 16bars/ 4 beats, go to “Options” then ” Project General Settings” and change the number 4 in the first box to 16. (This setting is just my personal preference because it allows me to do more within a single pattern). It’s Thursday already… quick beat update for the week:
