Fl Studio Guru:Vocal Mixing

Posted by Ms.Tris On July - 1 - 2010

WOW ..it’s so nice out today. I’m feeling very inspired. This is great because the sun won’t temp me to hit the streets lol..

I have been doing a lot more recording this year. Engineering is becoming more and more clear to me. Now that I can get some decent recordings done, I need to focus on vocal mixing. I’ve done so many post on mixing the beats, but not much on the other 50%, the vocals.

Here is a brand new Fl Studio Guru video which explains a few things about vocal mixing.
Fl Studio Guru: Voca lMixing (Compression and Eq)

If you don’t use Fl Studio, all the tips can be used in the DAW of your choice. Just use the plugins and editors you have to accomplish the same effects. It’s good to watch videos, and read post even if you don’t have the exact software. I’m always sharing “general techniques”, along with “unique to the software” specifics :)

Fl Studio 9.1:Club Banger Tutorial Part 2

Posted by Ms.Tris On May - 6 - 2010

Well Well the week is almost over .. I had a productive one I must say. Let’s get right back to it. This is a continuation from yesterdays:

Fl Studio 9.1:Club Banger Tutorial Part 1

I’ve started my beat with:
basic drum pattern, added a “lead” melody, added some effects, some percussion/ sound fx additions, and breaks to the drums.

Today I’m going to continue building the track starting with an additional melody which really flows in an opposite direction than the first. I am using the same notes F,G,G# and C * :-) * from yesterday.

This melody will be a “counter melody”. It will play at the same time as the main melody, but be more as an addition which I can vary through the verses:

Fl Studio 9.1: Club Banger Tutorial Part 1

Posted by Ms.Tris On May - 5 - 2010

Hey Hey Hey! :-) It’s a beautiful day with all the sun. It’s Wednesday already, the week is flying by for me. I am looking forward to the weekend because my family is big on holidays of any kind lol.

There is something about Spring, Summer, sun, and fun that makes me want to make happy beats. I am sure you’ve heard the term Club Banger lately. I usually ask the artist what type of beat do you need? 90% answer ” I need a Big Club Banger!”.

There are many options when creating a track that will go over well in any club. You can start any where you want when creating them as well. Some may say it’s all about the tempo and rhythm, some may say the chorus/hook is the key. Other folks may say it’s all about the melody.

I think it’s a combination of the above. If I’m sitting down to make a club banger, I follow a little mental template:
The tempo has to be fast enough to make people want to hit the dance floor. Above 90 bpm is a must..
The hook must be catchy and easy to remember.
The melody must be simple and one that will make people say ” I can’t get that song out of my head ” :-)

Next you’ll have to think of the type of club banger you are making. I find in today’s hip hop, most club bangers are a mix of dirty south, r&b and pop.

Let’s listen to a snippet from Ciara’s “G Is For A Girl (A-Z)” produced by The Y’s and Justin Timberlake:

Really catchy, danceable, nice tempo.. Ciaras club songs are always fit for dancing. This tracks uses a consistent melody through out, with added synths, percussion, fx, piano, and bassline when the hook comes in. It’s a real simple concept, once you get an idea of how to start, you’ll be able to make these in no time.

So how do I go about creating something similar?….

I’ll start by finding the tempo. I select a small loop using my sound editor program, save it,and insert it into a Fl Studio sampler channel..

I’ve chosen part of the hook. It’s has almost all the sounds used, including added percussion etc.

I use the “detect tempo” function to find approximate BPM/tempo:

G is For Girl is 93-94. From here I could start with a melody, the drums, a bassline, or a nice orchestra hit. If you’ve been following my tutorials, you know I like to start with drums. For my beats, the drums are important and I like them to have a certain feel before I start the rest of the track. When I do club bangers, the drums don’t have to be as elaborate, so I’ll let the melody to drive the song.

I add a simple hi hat, nice clap, and Kick to pattern #1. ( for tutorial purposes only, I’m using the same basic pattern that’s used commercially for club type hip hop tracks did, I will change this for final beat) and begin working on my main or “lead” melody.

Fl Studio FPC Mixer Routing

Posted by Ms.Tris Beats On October - 8 - 2009

What’s good with you all today? Hope your week is going nicely. I’ve been out and about handling beat business this morning. Almost ready to get the work going for the day. I’ll be online for help until around 4pm… Hit me up..say hi and all that good stuff :-)

I haven’t gotten into the FPC much since it was added to Fl Studio. Now that I have my hardware in sync, I wanted to use it for a few samples using the Mpc as a controller.

FL7_plugin_gen_fpc

This is something that was right in front of my face lol. I had no idea I could send the pads to single mixer channels. Thanks to HipKnokerZ On Youtube, I finally have it set up. Now I can export the sounds from the FPC one by one. Hope this helps you as well..

Fl Studio 8: A Closer Look At The Mixer

Posted by Ms.Tris Beats On July - 24 - 2009

Happy Friday All! I am “Super Charged” today….

A little Update:
I may be changing the site design very soon. The theme I am using will not work with wordpress updates :-( Boooo! lol. The updates are important for security purposes so I will have to do it in the near future..I am not sure if I ‘ll change the color scheme, but you may log on and see a completely different layout.

I wanted to start with interviews last month, but music, sessions, and much more came to the forefront. I can’t pinpoint when they will start, but I am still looking for more producers to feature if you are interested. Keep in mind I can’t feature everyone, but I will try to get to as many as I can.

Thanks all who have been helping me with broken links, and correcting mistakes. You are helping me run the site with comments and suggestions..much love 4 that!

mixer

Along my journey with Fl Studio, I have been eagerly trying to get a good clean mix straight from the program. With all the plugins included and the ability to add vsts, I am sure it can be done.

A lot of producers will tell you to export the instruments and mix in another DAW. I have even told you the same. Although this is true, I am still on my quest to perfect a song completely inside Fl ;-) ..

The best way to perfect anything is to learn as much as you can about it 1st. Next you will have to put that knowledge to work. I asked myself ” Do you really know all you can about Fl Studio?” the answer was a quick “No”.

Since my main focus is mixing at this time, the first thing I need to learn thoroughly is the Fl Mixer. I found two videos that explain the mixer clearly. Both are by:Felas212. He has a great youtube channel. I will feature more of his Fl videos , but feel free to check them out. Let him know www.mstrismusic.com sent you…
Intro To Fl Mixer

Mixing and Routing

I’ve never explained how I commit what I learn from the videos to memory. This may help others, so here’s what I do….
1st.
I have Fl Studio open, I will watch the videos, pause and try the techniques right away.
2nd
I repeat the techniques a few times with out the video
3rd
I’ll go back a few days later and try the technique again from memory

Slicex Tips and Help Files

Posted by Ms.Tris On April - 1 - 2009

What are you up to today? I’m about to get rolling with my 1st beat of the morning. I did fiddle around with the slicex yesterday, after watching the videos. Now I see the huge difference between the slicer and slicex.

There are many additions in slicex like the ability to add fx to each slice. This is is just one out of about 50 things I noticed right away. Another great option is being able to load two samples at once. My mind got to churning on this one.

Let’s say you have filtered a bassline from some funky soul sample but it’s all muffled. You load that in deck A. You could add a good clean bass sample over top using deck B. Then replay your bassline using your midi keyboard or draw it in on the piano roll.

I am actually super excited about this plugin now. I also remember the key reason I closed the slicex before, about 3 months ago. I couldn’t figure out how to make the samples “play til end” like the Fl Slicer does. This is a technique that I love.

What it does is allow you to trigger a sample start from your slice marker, and play the sample all the way through until the end. This way you can “play” your slices like an instrument without sudden stops, as well as select the sample end point in real time.

I had to google this, because I have the slicex open and ready to roll!~ Guess what?… the answer was in the HELP file…lol Image line didn’t make this as easy as it is on the old slicer. You have to run a script. The directions are listed under ” Quick Start” here:http://flstudio.image-line.com/help/html/plugins/Slicex.htm. Click through for more help on Slicex. I’ll be posting some tutorials on it soon. Always remember, ” The Help File is your friend”….

Wish me luck, I am off to see if I can get this to work….

Fl Studio Time Stretching

Posted by Ms.Tris On December - 4 - 2008

A lot of people have asked me how to time stretch in Fl Studio. Time stretching changes the speed of an audio file with out affecting the pitch. This technique is used heavily in hiphop for sampled beats.

There are many software editors that have the function such as Adobe Audition. Fl Studio developers have made it fairly easy, adding a few presets to get you started. I must note that Fl Studio Slicer will also do time stretching, between the two I think this way is easier if you are just getting into it.

Here is a video from Future Producers that walks you through with a very familiar sample:
