Key Chords: Chord Progression Discovery App

Posted by Ms.Tris On April - 25 - 2011

Hey Hey ..feels like we skipped spring and went straight to summer today..lol..

I’m so happy to tell you, that I’m well on my way with my guitar lessons. I know four chords, but my lil left pinky is still stiff as a board. I’m doing the dexterity exercises a lot this week.

I think I have found the jackpot of chord progression help :-) . It’s a site, as well as iphone app which gives you common chord progressions to use in your music.

It’s guitar based, but of course you can play the same progressions on piano or any instrument. I’ve been on the site daily since I found it. You can place your own chords for progressions and hear a demo of how it sounds. You can also do random progressions by “rolling the dice”. Here is a screen shot:

This is amazing! The official site is:www.drumbot.com. There are several handy tools for musicians, so click around..

The app is only 1.99 from the itunes store. I’m going to download the app as soon as I finish this post..woo hoo!

Chord Secrets

Posted by Ms.Tris On April - 13 - 2010

Good morning to ya! How are things? It’s a cloudy day here which makes it very easy to work :-) . I’m back on track, still fixing things with graphics on the site, but ready to roll this week.

As I get more into music theory it’s always good to find tips along the way. This is a little advanced, but it will help you get an idea of picture chords. The video is from www.gospel-chords.com. Gospel music heavily relies on chords 1st ,then the melodies. Since chords are universal, learning these techniques are great for every genre of music.

There is a full course for the lessons be sure to check out more info on the www.gospel-chords.com website:

Easy Way To Learn Progressions

Posted by Ms.Tris On October - 16 - 2008

Yesterday I made up a little challenge for myself. I was back and forth early a.m., trying to settle on a sample type, or a composed beat. I finally decided to take one scale and some chord progressions, then make a few styles of hip hop. The light bulb immediately went off after writing down the scale and progression in my notebook….repeat..”after writing down the scale, and progression in my notebook :-)

Music repeats itself, and what better way to learn than repetition. Now I ask those learning the chords with me to challenge yourself.

I’m going to start you off with a scale and some progressions, and later you can do this with them all if you choose.

F#Major Scale:

F#,G#,A#,B, C#,D#,E#(F)

F#Major Progression:

F#Maj,             l C#Maj,         l G#min,      l D#min,       l A#min,

The 3 notes for each chord

F# A# C#      l C# E# G#       l G# B D#         l D# F# A#        l A# C# F

Notes on the keyboard:

The Challenge: Choose three genres or styles of music, and make 3 beats using this scale and progressions. I am still working on mine but I went with a ‘ Dirty South beat’, ‘R&B Smooth beat’, and a ‘Pop beat’. I am trying to mix up the progressions, and make all the songs melodies extremely different. I’m not going to rush myself because I want to memorize the scale and chords as I’m working.

You don’t have to even do hip hop..you could do a Rock Song, classical, gospel, country… It’s up to you. By the time you finish… if you practice playing, and reading the notes.. I’ll bet you’ll learn the chords quickly…
