Key Chords: Chord Progression Discovery App

Posted by Ms.Tris On April - 25 - 2011

Hey Hey ..feels like we skipped spring and went straight to summer today..lol..

I’m so happy to tell you, that I’m well on my way with my guitar lessons. I know four chords, but my lil left pinky is still stiff as a board. I’m doing the dexterity exercises a lot this week.

I think I have found the jackpot of chord progression help :-) . It’s a site, as well as iphone app which gives you common chord progressions to use in your music.

It’s guitar based, but of course you can play the same progressions on piano or any instrument. I’ve been on the site daily since I found it. You can place your own chords for progressions and hear a demo of how it sounds. You can also do random progressions by “rolling the dice”. Here is a screen shot:

This is amazing! The official site is:www.drumbot.com. There are several handy tools for musicians, so click around..

The app is only 1.99 from the itunes store. I’m going to download the app as soon as I finish this post..woo hoo!

Piano Chord Tips and Songwriting

Posted by Ms.Tris On April - 11 - 2011

Great morning to you! I am feeling super :) Went to StreetLegal Studios last night for an epic session. Six emcees on a fire track I produced. I will surely keep you posted on this one!! …

I’m onto music theory lessons this morning. I have been working on a few pop type tracks for an artist. I am still having a little trouble doing the melodies before chords. So far it’s been easier for me to work, using chords 1st. Sometimes I have an idea in my head and need to lay it down before anything else. I know the only way to really get this down is to learn more music theory.

I found the perfect site that covers songwriting, theory, and song structure: garyewer.wordpress.com. The site theme is “The Essential Secrets of Songwriting”. I’ve read three articles that cleared up some of the chord and theory questions I’ve had for a while. It’s honestly one of the most complete music blogs I’ve read. I’m checking out another article now about What Is The Circle Of Fifths. Not only does author,Gary Ewer, explain theory in an easy manner, he also gives a few chord suggestions to help you understand his post clearly.

Like myself, I know that many of my readers use piano, keyboards, and or keyboard midi controllers. I am sure you will find tons of valuable info atGary Ewer’s blog. Since many aspects of music theory and songwriting are covered; writers, guitarist, and players of other instruments will benefit from the site also.

Free Chord Progression Chart, and How I Use It Part2

This is a follow up from yesterdays tutorial “Free Chord Progression Chart, and How I Use It Part1″

Did you practice yesterday? Let’s get back to it today with steps 5 & 6. This is actually the fun part. I like to use the steps in this order:
5.Play some chord progressions
6.Incorporate your melody to your chord progressions

Music is based on principles and theory. Once you learn theory, there is no set way of how to apply it. If you apply it using the universal principles of composition, there won’t be room for disharmony.

In this tutorial I am using the “F Major Pentatonic Scale” ( F,G,A,C,D) from the LookNoHands/chordhouse/piano site, the “F Major chord progression” (F Major, F, Gm, Am, Bb, C, Dm, E dim) from the chart.

Free Chord Progression Chart, and How I Use It

Posted by Ms.Tris On July - 24 - 2008

Good morning all..hope everything is going well for you. This Tutorial will be a 2 part series for beginners in music theory
For those of you finding my site for the first time, I do hope you return often, and subscribe by email or rss feed to stay updated. :-) . My site is not only a tutorial site, but it’s my personal blog also. I share things that I have learned in the past, as well as what I am learning and beats I’m working on daily.
I am fairly new to proper composition using chord progressions. This is one of the most requested emails I get. I first started learning theory around this time last year. I thought “Okaaay.. I have some chord progressions now what”?…
It takes years to learn composition. Many producers go to college to understand theory. I work with several artist who request “Dirty South” beats. This style of production relies heavily on chords, and drums. So I had to pump up the volume;I had to come up with a system that works for me now.

What’s up all, been busy this week with a new project. I’m working on some eastcoast beats and I’m using some chord progressions to make a loop for chopping. Take a look at a nice video from Perpetual Productions. I like the way he explains his use of chords, and plays the beat at the beginning and end…enjoy and practice practice..

I Was A Sample Queen…

Posted by Ms.Tris Beats On April - 30 - 2008

I remember a time when Hiphop was a baby. Back then I had already decided that I wanted to be a star. With rap, that dream seemed one I was able to reach. I started rhyming at a young age. I always loved music and now, destiny had touched me on the shoulder.
I spent years writing notebook after notebook. Studying the great female emcees at the time. I practiced, I rhymed , I recorded songs..always striving to reach “The Industry”. That place never arrived the way I expected.
I had a producer who had his own home studio. We were on the way to that ^place. One day he decided that producing rap music wasn’t right for him. I was left without a producer, but I had something even bigger. I had music inside. I realize now; that year, was a turning point in my life.
Making a long story very short, I bought a small keyboard and began to tinker around. Along with every artist, I thought I made the hottest songs ever created by man kind..lol. One day I’m gonna share some of those lil recordings…
HipHop was flourishing as a full fledge genre. I could only play the keyboard by ear,but that never mattered. My favorite producers at the time Dr.Dre, Rza, Pete Rock,& Havoc all used samples. They were my teachers through sound. Almost every producer/beatmaker mimicked their styles until they created their own. I had no idea that it was against the law to sample. I bought an Asr 10 and started collecting material. I started doing what I heard the big producers do, take a song that you like and make a beat.Today I have over 1400

Some of my collection

albums/vinyl.

Once I started to sample it became a lil more than just me making beats. It’s hard to describe, and I’m sure you’ve heard the term ” The Art Of Sampling”. Some will say what kind of art is in stealing other peoples music? I’d have to respond….” Do you think the average 17 yr old knows the laws of copyrights?” Speaking for myself I didn’t understand or know the laws until 5 yrs into my career. When I first heard about copyright infringement, I was told oh it’s okay to use 13 secs…So I sampled on.This was the main way to make Hiphop for many many years.
