MsTris Beats Presents: The UMPH: Audible Mention Guest Post

Posted by Ms.Tris On November - 20 - 2012

I introduced Audible Mention a few months back. I had the honor of doing a guest post in September. It’s all about adding “The UMPH” to your drums. I added a video as well. Here is an exerpt which links to the full article:

Are you the greatest drummer that ever graced the planet? Oh the dreams of super producers like us! Though we may not be sitting behind a 50 piece Pearl set, there are ways to add spunk to your thump. Let’s imagine that you have created a basic 8 bar pattern. You’ve got your Drums That Match and Knock . You are now ready to add something to spice things up a bit. This something is what I call “The Umph”.

The “Umph” can be anything that meshes with the frequencies of your main pattern. For today’s post I started with a basic kick and snare pattern. I have some understanding about the frequency range of drums which our Audible Mention host explained as:

“20-10k is where you will find that sexy shimmer on hats and cymbals.

10-5k is where you’ll find the sound’s presence, meaning how close it seems to you. More importantly how close it is to other drums.

I hope your unofficial end of summer weekend went great. Happy Labor Day to ya!! I have some interesting things to share with you from last weeks Sheila E. concert. I’ll be posting a video up before the end of the week….I am also seriously busy starting today, I’ll fill you in on that too…

Well Well 2 the WELL!! Look what we have here! I admit I am such a fan of great musicians especially the ones who make hip hop in melodic fashion. If you have been on Soundclick in the past 4 years you have surely seen the name Johnny Juliano. He’s been topping the charts with almost each uploaded track. Johnny has also produced records for Wiz Khalifa and other industry artist.

What makes Johnny stand out from the rest for me is he incorporates Funk into his grooves. What I mean by that can only be referenced by listening to the artist of the 80’s. Anything coming from Princes Purple camp, or the wonderfully funky George Clinton crew. They use melodies in a certain way that heavily relies on manipulating scales in a moving manner.

The second thing that caught my ear are Johnny’s amazing mixes. I love the strong clarity that can be noticed in each beat. All this from inside Fl Studio? WOW…You can hear a collection of some of his works here:

Recently Juliano has been sharing tips and tricks. He’s released his first mixing video as many producers requested. The video touches on the basics of mixing inside Fl Studio. Hopefully he’ll continue to release them. You all know I am a strong believer of “each one teach one”. Thanks Johnny for sharing your knowledge!

Remember the techniques can be worked into any DAW. The whole idea is to leave room for each sound frequency included in your mix.

How To Do Automation In Studio One

Posted by Ms.Tris On July - 11 - 2012

Wonderful day to ya! Having some fun this morning mixing a few tracks and trying out a few new tricks. I am about to try pitch automation. I recently did a huge set up with all my favorite software. I had everything going through Fl Studio 10. This worked fairly well and I am still testing a few things. What I’ve done is Rewired Fl Studio, Reason, and Reaper; sequencing using Maschine. Everyone wanted to know why would I do all that..lol. Well, each has something I love, and of course I like trying new things. I am also finding out which set up will make it easiest if I need to use either program. Here’s what I mean: Let’s say I am using Fl Studio but would like to throw in sounds from Reason, and record a hook. This for me is a hassle doing it all in Fl, so I need to use Reaper or Studio One. Or how about Ni Maschine with Fl Studio’s mixer and Reason NNXT..again not convenient inside Fl Studio. So I am making a template where I can load one program and use every single production element I own if I’d like to.

Studio One 2 has been working very well with everything. There’s not much of a learning curve and so far it’s easiest for me to get a decent mix. Presonus has made this DAW basically click and go. Another cool thing is you can do several automated steps on one track without having tons of automation lanes open. Here’s a video which explains Studio One Automation. Remember a lot of this can be done in other the other DAWS. It’s just that I am using Studio One today. I will post about automation in Fl Studio in the near future.

Really easy huh?…let me know if you are using Studio One, as I get more used to it I may need some tips :)..

How To Select Studio Monitors and Place Them

Posted by Ms.Tris On June - 7 - 2012

Hey you! What’s great in music this week? I’m working diligently on music as I get closer to my one course ending. After this math class, it’s back to two courses and less music..boo to less music but Yaaay to more knowledge…:) A little reminder: When I skip a week of posting, I am deeply into two classes. My schedule is 5.5 weeks of two course then 5.5 weeks of one course. Please know that I work hard to leave you plenty information to check out if I’ll be away. I appreciate you holding me down by visiting, emailing, and commenting.

Wow!! I’ve been back on my trusty program Fl Studio 10. I am loving the mix I’ve been getting. One thing I’ve learned this week is to leave plenty headroom everywhere. I had been mixing way too loud and loosing all kinds of frequencies. I’ve also been setting my monitor volume lower while mixing to avoid ear fatigue. Fl Studio’s plugins are awesome as well…the parametric eq2 is very useful for all instruments! We’ll surely get into more post about how to use the included effects…they really work when you learn how to use them…

I have the KRK Rokit 5 monitors and the M-audio Studiophile Av 30 in use in my lab. I haven’t posted enough about monitors here. It is extremely important to be able to hear what your beats really sound like. Every set of monitors handles different frequencies in different ways. It’s good to get an idea of what monitors do and how to place them in your studio. I found two useful videos to share all about monitors, and placement:

What’s happening with you? I am sitting here trying to get my day started…just heard my boy T_Sizzle #55 Terrell Suggs may be out for the season BOOOO..You all know I love my Ravens football…. wishing T Sizzle a speedy recovery for sure..

I think Reason 6 is one of the best releases from Propellerhead. There are so many options for music production and audio recording. I just wish I could use vst instruments inside the sequencer. This video really breaks down mixing techniques in Reason 6. It’s a full master class, over an hour. Go grab some food and drink…sit back and enjoy…

Reason 6 Mixing Masterclass with Gary Bromham

Always remember if you don’t have Reason 6, this is still worthy of watching. The techniques can be used for any mix project.
