Thinking About Using M-Audio?

Posted by Ms.Tris On November - 7 - 2008

Happy happy historical election week Friday!~ I am being a tech geek today..rewiring my hardware..again :-), and I think I’m going to do a clean install of windows xp very soon.

I am using the Delta Omni i/o audio interface as pictured above. I am configuring it to record 4 tracks simultaneously..I hope !~ I mentioned before that I also use the Edirol M-16 Dx, and planned to ebay it. Well that changed after recording a vocal session a couple weeks ago. The Edirol worked so great for vocals that seasoned engineer,Mark Carey even gave me a compliment. I was feeling like a winner after that!~ So the Edirol is terrific. The only sound that I notice a digital difference, is on the Kick drum coming from the Mpc. I have compared, and would rather have my kicks going straight from the Mpc, through the Delta sound card, into my Multitrack software.

I found a wonderful document all about M-Audio products. It’s super easy to follow and contains info on firewire, monitors, soundcards, and even midi interfaces….

After reading through, this is helpful for understanding audio equipment from other developers as well. Real good read indeed…

Choosing Your Digital Audio Workstation

Posted by Ms.Tris On October - 29 - 2008

Happy Wednesday…how are those beats coming along? Hope you have been making some bangers, and building your catalog. B Crust asked me what’s the difference between Fl Studio and Adobe Audition. A Digital Audio Workstation or Daw is a computer with programs designed for working with audio. Most DAW systems will include an audio editor, multi track recorder, and music production software. You will basically have two types of main programs for making beats. A “digital audio editing” program and a “music production” program. Over the years many developers have made programs that do both, and simply call the “do it” all software a DAW program or DAW. I will try to explain a few differences.

Adobe Auditon as explained onWiki Adobe Audition:

Adobe Audition (formerly Cool Edit Pro) is a digital audio “editor” computer program from Adobe Systems featuring both a multi track, non-destructive mix/edit environment and a destructive-approach waveform editing view.

When you look at all digital audio programs like Sonar 7, ProTools, Cubase, Logic and Adobe, many of them will allow you to do all, or some of the following and more:

Record and edit multitrack audio/ video
Add effect plugins
Add vst instruments
Manipulate audio recordings
Automate mixing
Mastering
Rendering multitracks to several formats.

Programs like Reason and Fl Studio started of as ” music production software” including software synths, drum modules, and samplers. Today Fl Studio allows you to record and edit multitrack audio, adding it to the list of do it all “DAW” programs. Reason is still considered only “Music Production Software”, meaning you can not record audio directly into the program.

Here is a nice article that may help you decide which DAW Software is right for you:

For more info on some of the most popular DAW software and a comparison chart check out:
Digital Audio Workstation shootout

You can see, there is a wide variety of workstations and software. I like Sonar and Adobe Audition, it’s more of personal preference than me saying ..”oh this is better than that one”. I work with both hardware and software music production equipment. So I needed a DAW system that can handle midi, multitrack, vst instruments, and live audio recording. Although Fl Studio is capable of being my only DAW software, I don’t do live recording, final mixes, or vocals within the program. I have noticed other programs handle those functions better. Most developers offer free demo downloads. Try them out, and choose the one which helps you work easily, efficiently, and most of all handle your production needs with no hassle.

All About Drums

Posted by Ms.Tris On October - 28 - 2008

What’s up all..back at it with some cool videos. It’s all about drums today. Friday I mentioned how Swizz Beatz gets crazy with his drums, banging out on the Mpc. I just want to remind you to be creative with your rhythms. I like to chop up loops, add effects, and blend them in with the drums I either play out, or program.
I have also been a huge fan of one the greatest drummers ever, Sheila E.. She’s amazing on percussion and a full piece set up. She does a lot of Latin cadences even in her ” Pop” type songs. I often try to mix Latin percussion loops into hip hop rhythms, adding flange or phasers. Mixing techniques from different genres will help you make better drum patterns for hip hop.

Studio Field Trips

Posted by Ms.Tris Beats On September - 19 - 2008

What’s up all, just returning from Street Legal Entertainments new studio, and I’m feeling pretty inspired. It was good to sit, listen, and learn some new things. We listened to a few tracks, and talked about mixer connections. I learned a lot about routing the audio signal properly. It’s always good to see how engineers work when venturing into mixing. So don’t be shy producers, there are many studios that could use an intern. Some won’t mind you sitting in on a few sessions. Grab the yellow pages, search the net for studios in your area. Give them a call or send an email… good luck and enjoy your ” studio field trip” as much as I enjoy mine….

Here are some cool videos all about studios:

Mysto & Pizzi On The Openlabs Neko

Posted by Ms.Tris Beats On September - 17 - 2008

Boy did I get caught up in a spiral of production videos yesterday..I was working on the Mpc (finally)… I almost finished the beat..checked my email..and that was it..lol… I really have to be careful with that, I was clicking and clicking….but as usual I learned a lot. Before I get back to the soulful beat I was making, you know I had to share some of the things I found….

The Open labs Neko is sweat!~This is a very nice all in one pc and workstation that came out I think sometime in 03-04. Timbaland has a custom one which includes the Asr 10 sound library in a smaller version called “Meko”. Both are expensive, really not something I’d rush and buy because I already have a pc and sound module. I’ve watched the demos, and came across Mysto and Pizzi’s blog where they have a 30 minute session on video. They are really producing a track here:
Broadcasting Live with Ustream.TV

Here’s the link to the blog which they post on regularly

Next up Ryan Tedder a 19 year old pianist/ drummer. I really enjoyed his talent and funny shorts on his channel. … he even puts on the ” I’m playing the greatest melody ever” face .. Check out the chords used around 2:00min. He’s on his way to being the next Rodney Jerkens type producer..
