Pro Tools 8 Tutorial: Introduction

Posted by Ms.Tris On May - 27 - 2009

Good Morning All! I know when some of you read the title you thought ” finally!” lol I know.. I know.. Pro Tools info is long overdue. I’ve only used Pro Tools a few times, which I can count on one hand.

It’s one of the main recording software on the market. Many major studios use Pro Tools for commercial releases. You may have heard artist in the industry say “the producer sent the Pro Tools session..”
For me it wasn’t the easiest DAW to use. Although I’ve chosen a different set up, I am curious to see more about it.

There are tons of Pro Tools videos on youtube. I found one thats almost 15 minutes long and gets really specific for new users.

Just when we are getting Reason 4.0 to Rewire properly here comes the answer! Propellerhead now has recording software yaay!

So far this is looking lovely. I haven’t read any info about vst instruments;however, it can be rewired as a slave which could be a work around.

Reaper Videos: Jackpot!

Posted by Ms.Tris On May - 7 - 2009

Hey all how are you? It’s so rainy on the eastcoast ..but work must go on…

reaper-23

I’ve been having a productive week. I had a vocal session with 43 tracks, not including the tracked out beat! I feel very good about engineering this project. I am using Reaper to record the vocals.

When I got to the mix, I really had to figure out the fx sends so I could add the same audio effects to main vocals. What this does is allow me to route several tracks to one single track. If I’m working with lots of tracks, this will help me to save cpu and time. I’ll explain…

Let’s say I have ten main vocals all needing eq,reverb and compression. With out sending them to one track for effects, I would have to insert 10 eq, 10 reverb and 10 compressor plugins. I have a pretty decent pc..but I know that would cause problems. Using the sends and returns I can add 1 eq, 1 reverb, and 1 compressor for all ten main vocals.

Here is a video that explains how to do this in Reaper. I was so excited to find this youtube channel. It is a Reaper Tutorial Jackpot, actually a production tutorial Jackpot! The guys from: limitless-studios.com have videos on a lot of things I cover here on the site as well. I don’t have time today, but I’ll surely check more out over the weekend. Let them know MsTrisMusic.com sent ya!

Limitless Studios : Reaper fx, sends, and returns

I know everyone doesn’t use Reaper, but try to use a DAW that allows you to use fx, send, and returns. If you are not mixing yet, you’ll need this option for advanced mixes. Later this spring, I will add more videos on other programs like Pro-Tools as well.

Propellerhead Reason: Malstrom Tweaks

Posted by Ms.Tris On April - 22 - 2009

Good morning all! Hope your week is going smooth.. I’m about to work on some crunk tracks this morning, and later some east coast beats.

malstrom

I’ve been asked many times about the synths I use for dirty south beats. I like a variety of sounds. I use vst plugins mentioned on the site, as well as the Alesis Micron. My absolute favorites are the Subtractor and Malstrom Graintable Synthesizers, both included with Reason.

When you get into them, they are awesome modules. I usually start with a preset and begin tweaking right away. Once I get a sound I like I save it as my own preset.

Here are a couple nice videos which pretty much sums up the knobs I twist on the Malstrom. This should get you making some original sounds in no time….Enjoy!

As soon as I watched the videos I found a GREAT tutorial explaining all about the features of the Malstrom:(This is not a quick read..lol I’m still looking at it)

Slicex Tips and Help Files

Posted by Ms.Tris On April - 1 - 2009

What are you up to today? I’m about to get rolling with my 1st beat of the morning. I did fiddle around with the slicex yesterday, after watching the videos. Now I see the huge difference between the slicer and slicex.

There are many additions in slicex like the ability to add fx to each slice. This is is just one out of about 50 things I noticed right away. Another great option is being able to load two samples at once. My mind got to churning on this one.

Let’s say you have filtered a bassline from some funky soul sample but it’s all muffled. You load that in deck A. You could add a good clean bass sample over top using deck B. Then replay your bassline using your midi keyboard or draw it in on the piano roll.

I am actually super excited about this plugin now. I also remember the key reason I closed the slicex before, about 3 months ago. I couldn’t figure out how to make the samples “play til end” like the Fl Slicer does. This is a technique that I love.

What it does is allow you to trigger a sample start from your slice marker, and play the sample all the way through until the end. This way you can “play” your slices like an instrument without sudden stops, as well as select the sample end point in real time.

I had to google this, because I have the slicex open and ready to roll!~ Guess what?… the answer was in the HELP file…lol Image line didn’t make this as easy as it is on the old slicer. You have to run a script. The directions are listed under ” Quick Start” here:http://flstudio.image-line.com/help/html/plugins/Slicex.htm. Click through for more help on Slicex. I’ll be posting some tutorials on it soon. Always remember, ” The Help File is your friend”….

Wish me luck, I am off to see if I can get this to work….

Fl Studio Slicex Tutorials

Posted by Ms.Tris On March - 30 - 2009

It’s Monday… you know I’m working already.
I received a lot of comments last week when I was super busy. I answered most and some I’m doing post on. I will get to them all between now and Wednesday.

Most of you who have been reading noticed I’ve only done tutorials on the Fl Slicer. I am so used to using it. I tried the Slicex only a few times. It appears to be a super advanced upgrade to the slicer.

I have gotten a few questions on it, so lets take a closer look at the plugin.
Thanks to Rooky Beater who gave me a jump start with this video from

Ste1438 Youtube Channel

This is cool because he explains about adding fx to the slicex as well…

Wow! this is the first time I’ve been to this channel..there are many Fl Studio plugins covered here:

I won’t be able to play around with this one today, but watching the videos has me curious about Slicex all over again 🙂

Using Reason As A Sound Mod With Mpc

Posted by Ms.Tris On March - 6 - 2009

Happy Friday All 🙂 Woohoo… Today is gonna be warmer than usual as we enter into Spring. It’s days like this that I have to close the blinds so I won’t be tempted to go outside and stay outside..lol

It’s also days like this where a little youtube motivation helps me get into work mode. While I was at the No Guts No Glory Battle, I was discussing how I’m slowly getting into using the Mpc efficiently. My thing with production that I work on constantly other than mixing, is: it takes me forever to make the HITS… don’t get me wrong, I can make a beat within an hour. It’s the sure fire bangers that take me a lonnnggg time. I use a lot of percussion tracks which gets so time consuming on the Mpc. I also like to turn knobs on vsts and when I use Reasons Malstrom or Subtractor.

My fam and great producer “Phathead” mentioned that I could use my software as a sound module. I told him ” well I’ve got the motif connected…don’t really need to use them”… WRONG!

I logged onto Youtube this morning, not even thinking about the conversation nor possibilities of using my software as a module..and BOOM ..clicking around on my subscribed channels I found a few videos about it. I may have mentioned this before, but I haven’t seen the videos I’ll be posting today.

After trying it out, my mind just opened up to an exciting new way of using the mpc. Well it’s not new, but new to me using it. Now if I can figure out how to have multiple instruments from Reason on different tracks in the Mpc; I can see how this will help.

I know Reason and Fl Studio very well. I love the ability to use Vsts in Fl Studio, as well as Reasons samplers and modules. On the other hand the Mpc kicks are my absolute best! The thing is I am super slow using the Mpc for anything. lol…I think it’s the knob turning, the pc just seems so much faster when tweaking synth sounds and doing major percussion work. Also, adjusting the actual sounds from the motif rack takes a good little while itself.

Whala! Best of both worlds.. I can play the mpc drums, then get all my synths and percs from Reason or Fl Studio..yay. I can also use my hardware synths, all sequenced in one place on the Mpc.

Some of you may think ” Why don’t you just sequence in Protools or Reaper?”. Well then I’d have to use Rewire, and midi tracks. Both require bouncing the midi to audio files. Using software as modules I can record all on the mpc, record into the multitrack and work strictly with audio files. This makes it much easier as a beginner to mixing.

I’m still thinking all this through.. so please enjoy the videos and let me know if you have any suggestions.
