9th Wonder Interviews:A Fl Studio Power User

Posted by Ms.Tris On August - 2 - 2008

Happy Saturday to all. Had a super busy week, I don’t usually post on weekends though I’d like to more often. Theres an on going battle about Fl Studio users versus Reason or Hardware. It’s funny to me because if the beat is hot, who cares what you use. In interviews I say ‘ I’ll use pots and pans if I had to..” :-)..
9th Wonder has used Fl Studio for all of his beats, and he’s worked with Jay Z, Beyonce, Bootcamp and many more. If you know your equipment well, there’s no limit to what you can acheive….

Pitch Shifting With Fl Studio Granulizer

Posted by Ms.Tris On July - 29 - 2008

I ‘m smiling because I had no idea the granulizer could do this … Way to go to Ace Pincter for this great tutorial.

You can pitch shift with a lot of software but I thought this was pretty cool. Check out more of ace’s music:

Pete Rock Speaks On Drum Machines

Posted by Ms.Tris On July - 29 - 2008

Good morning all. Very soon I’ll be getting into some Mpc 2500 tutorials. I’ve had mine a little over a year, and I’m finally comfortable making beats on it. I started on hardware and went to software. Today I use a mixture of both. Between the two software is definitely faster, but I can’t deny, the beats made on hardware need less tweaking out of the box. You can accomplish the same thing with software that you can with hardware. There is no better or worse really. Always remember when you hear folks debating what’s best, it’s not what you use, it’s how you use it. The one reason, and only reason I wanted the Mpc is for the distinct sound of kick drums. Other than that results are pretty much equal with knowledge of the equipment. Read the rest of this entry »

Free Chord Progression Chart, and How I Use It Part2

Posted by Ms.Tris On July - 25 - 2008

This is a follow up from yesterdays tutorial “Free Chord Progression Chart, and How I Use It Part1”

Did you practice yesterday? Let’s get back to it today with steps 5 & 6. This is actually the fun part. I like to use the steps in this order:
5.Play some chord progressions
6.Incorporate your melody to your chord progressions

Music is based on principles and theory. Once you learn theory, there is no set way of how to apply it. If you apply it using the universal principles of composition, there won’t be room for disharmony.

In this tutorial I am using the “F Major Pentatonic Scale” ( F,G,A,C,D) from the LookNoHands/chordhouse/piano site, the “F Major chord progression” (F Major, F, Gm, Am, Bb, C, Dm, E dim) from the chart.

Free Chord Progression Chart, and How I Use It

Posted by Ms.Tris On July - 24 - 2008

Good morning all..hope everything is going well for you. This Tutorial will be a 2 part series for beginners in music theory
For those of you finding my site for the first time, I do hope you return often, and subscribe by email or rss feed to stay updated. :-). My site is not only a tutorial site, but it’s my personal blog also. I share things that I have learned in the past, as well as what I am learning and beats I’m working on daily.
I am fairly new to proper composition using chord progressions. This is one of the most requested emails I get. I first started learning theory around this time last year. I thought “Okaaay.. I have some chord progressions now what”?…
It takes years to learn composition. Many producers go to college to understand theory. I work with several artist who request “Dirty South” beats. This style of production relies heavily on chords, and drums. So I had to pump up the volume;I had to come up with a system that works for me now.
