Recording Vocals: Quick Start

Posted by Ms.Tris On March - 10 - 2009

What’s good with you ? Hope all is well and the beats are bangin! The unthinkable has occurred…my main pc is super dead ..but I won’t let that stop me. I’m sure I just need to replace the power supply, guess I’ll hit up the Geek Squad or something… anywho’s… I must carry on either using my laptop or all hardware. Looks like I’ll be having an interesting week…

I have a vocal session this week which reminded me I hadn’t done another post about recording them. I’ve been practicing and I have some suggestions from the few sessions I’ve done.

Professional studios usually spend high dollars on microphones and hardware needed to record vocals as clear as possible. There are several types of microphones on the market as well. You may have heard the names: condensor, cardoid, and omni-directional. All serving specific purposes. One of the most popular for vocals being the “condensor ” type.

With anything, we will all get what we pay for. Mics can be more expensive than Mpcs and Keyboards. What ever your set up, always remember you will need a “good clear vocal signal” going into your multitrack environment. If we pay 30$ , then we’ll get a 30$ signal most likely. If you have a low end mic you may be able to tweak out some of the hiss and noise. In the long run, the low cost mic will become time consuming because it takes so much to fix the recordings. Overall you may have to adjust levels using eq and effects like “hiss removal”. The better the mic signal going into the recording software/hardware means less chance of recording unwanted noise signals.

If you plan on doing vocals seriously, I suggest a good mic. I started with a RadioShack mic, which cost between 40- 50 bucks. I upgraded to a $199 audio technica which serves my set up well. Without any knowledge of mixing, I heard the difference immediately after changing them over.

I’d consider this a starter mic. Since I’ve purchased it, there have been several mics that have been released within the same price range. You will have to google the specs and compare what’s best for your work flow. I have suggested to someone setting up a studio on a small budget to start around the 200$ range. After researching, and hearing stories from other studios, the mics around that price work fine for new engineers. The recordings may require a little more labor..but they work!

Dynamic Producer Live March11th & 9th Ward Gucci Recap

Posted by Ms.Tris On March - 5 - 2009

Happy Friday eve to all… I’m about to get right to work this morning… many beats to make and opportunities are knocking extremely fast. I must find a way to get the beats done a little more quickly lol.

The last Dynamic Producer Live event info got to you the night before… This time you have a few days to get some music ready :-). First I’ll recap briefly…I can’t share every single detail, but you get an idea of how things went……

I was very excited last Sat. Felisha the CEO of Dynamic Producer “DP” has really stretched into great waters. I paid my fee Sat. morning, went on about my day til around 9:20pm so I could log on early as suggested.

Several of us had a few log on issues. After they figured out the “first time live” tech delays, it was on and poppin.

We had a few minutes to meet and greet. The atmosphere was cool. I don’t have a webcam yet, so I just typed into a chat box. I could see all the producers clearly, we said our hellos, and in walks 9thWard!~

On my pc monitor, I could see each person to my left and the chat on the right.. all live in real time..sweet!

Felsiha gave an interview. 9th Ward was very humble and shared so much info on what to expect when sending in beats, as well as the types of beats he needs for his album

We were able to ask questions in the chat which Dp asked 9th Ward live.

After the interview, 9th Ward answered all the questions directly to us. It was almost like we were all in the same room.. Dp mission accomplished!

I had a ball.. laid back vibe, and handling business? Can’t ask for much more..

The fees are worth it, 10 $ general attendance. Which allows you to participate with no beat submissions.

Producers who paid the 30$ fee had the chance to submit music to be played live.. This involves a review of the beats by DP officials. Beats may or may NOT make the cut..

Producers who paid the 100$ fee were guaranteed a chance to play 3 tracks for 9th Ward, after which he gave his honest opinion. He also told where to send the music. He kept it real about budgets, and the politics of his current situation.

Overall I’d give the event 10 out of 10. I will attend the next one on March 11th…

Here is the flyer for the “So So Def A&R” March 11th event.. I’ll keep you all posted on these as much as possible. I think this is a great opportunity for us all! For more info:

Fl Studio 8 Tutorial:Kick Tweaking 1 Basics (with files)

Posted by Ms.Tris On March - 3 - 2009

What’s up all.. it is super cold here on the eastcoast..bundle up well if you have to go out!~

I had a wonderful time at the battle last Thursday. The final round beats went well. I am offering the winner the one he had the victory over, and I sold one of the others..great! The third I’m uploading for a free download..(please read agreement). I didn’t have time to mix them like I wanted. Which would involve ” tracking each instrument out and doing a final mix in Reaper“. I did… a few times actually, but winded up going back to the origional versions. I just wasn’t feeling the mix, maybe I was rushing who knows. The kicks were still knocking hard over the club system. A couple producers came up and asked me “What are you using now?” You all know I use both software and hardware..but the beats I played that night, 1 was straight from Fl Studio rough mix and the other 2 straight from the mpc2500 rough mix. No one knew which one came from what…lol what is your guess??

.. which leads us to today’s tutorial 🙂

I must make this statement: I normally don’t use stock sounds. In order to make it easy to follow tutorials, I try to use sounds that everyone should have with the program. This way it’s easy for everyone to do hands on work when going through the tutorials using the same sounds…cool

As a pre production method you will want your kicks to knock as hard as possible within your workstation or software. Quality sound samples are the best way to go. I’ve done a few post on knocking kicks, this one will break down my method in Fl Studio using stock sounds. Once you get the hang of it you’ll find it works well on most kicks that need help…

1st Step: Make a basic drum pattern using stock sounds from Fl Studio HipHop pack:

Basic pattern; Kick Snare Hat 90 Bpm No effect on Kick
