Bassline Tutorials

Posted by Ms.Tris On July - 15 - 2009

Back to the Bass -ics 🙂

Whenever I made a sample beat, I used to make it my business to add a funky bassline. I recently noticed my need to get beats out quickly had me straying from this more. I began to filter the samples high frequencies out instead. This technique works fine, but the beats where I played the bassline sound better in my opinion.

The first beat I made a bassline to, became a local hit in 2005. People still mention this as being one of their favorite tracks:

“When I’m In The Room” by Ogun

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

The bassline can drive your beat as much as the rhythm and melody if you choose. You can even start your beat with the bassline and build around it.

Today we’ll explore a few methods of making basslines. When I made an effort to add them, they became part of a signature style for me. Some what like 9th Wonder, he adds really funky basslines over his samples.

I made the “When I’m In The Room” beat in 2004, but listening today reminds me to get back my bass. The videos are for piano or playing bass with a midi controller… Let the bass begin!

Mpc Tuesday:Time Signatures

Posted by Ms.Tris On July - 14 - 2009

Hey all, how are you? I have the Mpc fired up, about to make a beat for a new artist that I will feature here very soon. Hopefully he’ll record at my studio so I can capture the footage.

I’ve had my Mpc for about 2 yrs now. I must confess I don’t use it often enough. First it was the learning curve. Once I learned how to use it, I still thought I could use software more efficiently.

I sat down last week and made a beat on the Mpc2500 really quick. So I guess the final ice has been broken. 🙂

It is time for me to learn this piece of equipment like I know software. I am starting by changing the time signatures. I imagine this will help me get precise chops when recording in real time. Today I am fiddling around with an 8/4 time signature building the beat in 4 bar measures.

Q.First of all, what are time signatures? A.Time signatures are the amount of beats in a measure. Quite simple right? I know not so easy at first for me either lol…Well here is a video that explains time signatures clearly…

Before I begin my beat making, I need to know how to change the time signature. I couldn’t find many videos on this for the Mpc2500. I did find one for the 4000.
Expert Village:How to Use the Akai MPC 4000 : Time Signature on the Akai MPC 4000

This is explained on the 4000, but I am pretty sure all mpcs have the same function.
“On the Mpc2500 scroll to the “Tsig 4/4” , highlight the “4/4″ part and select Window to open the editing screen…”

I’ll let you know the how the 8/4 turns out. Mpc users what time signatures do you use? and what time signature settings do you think work best for hiphop? Hit me up with some comments below, I’d really like to get some feedback..

Mixing: Eq Tips and Tutorials

Posted by Ms.Tris On July - 13 - 2009

Good morning all! Ready to roll …Hope all has been well with you and the beats are flowing.

Mixing is one of the most important parts of music production. You could have the hottest beat on the planet, if the mix is not great, then the beat will sound crappy.

So many questions come to mind about mixing. Where do you start, how do you know what effects to add etc. There are no set rules to mixing, but there are tips that will help you tremendously through out the process.

I was one who always allowed the engineer to mix. A professional engineer who has studied the area of sound frequencies and mixing, has a trained ear. He or she may notice things in music that the producer or beat maker may not.

A professional engineer will know the frequency range of a kick drum, snare, instruments, and vocals. I’m learning that this is essential to achieve a great mix.

This also reminds me that EQ may be one of the most important plugins to learn. Now that I have advanced into engineering..yaay! I am doing a lot of study on eq and various plugins. We will eventually cover my favorites, but I think this is the best place to start when beginning to mix.

Today I’ll post few videos I found that cover frequency and Eq..

I did a post all about sound frequency here A Look At Sound Frequency. I suggest taking a quick look for review, then watch the videos. Repetition is a great way to commit music techniques to memory. on to the vids…
