Reaper With Maschine:Ms.Tris Basic Template

Posted by Ms.Tris On June - 18 - 2010

Hey All! I really wanted to do this as a tutorial today. I am editing video, and photos from a wedding I filmed in NJ last weekend. Everything is going smooth, but it takes a lot of time for the video files. Time won’t allow a full length write up, I figured I can at least add the template because I know 2 people who have gotten Maschine recently….

This is fairly easy to use, and maschine should open up when you open the project file

This is a basic Reaper Template w/ Maschine.
I have routed 8 Maschine Outs w/ drums using NI Maschine factory sounds, and two Reaper Vsts
to midi out 1&2.

I have each Reaper track set to record audio
You can record your entire project inside Maschine, then track as audio in Reaper.

If you’d like to use more vst instruments, just “insert virtual instrument on new track” inside Reaper and press “io”. Next “add new receive,” and select “Maschine 1”. Change the 1st “Midi” box from “All” to “3”. You can continue to add up to 16 vst instruments by following the exact steps. Your next vst would >>Change the 1st “Midi” box from “All” to “4”..

As you add your instruments remember to assign the proper “midi out” inside Maschine as you add them…
Vst “1” inside Reaper =Midi Out “1” inside Maschine..and so on

New Music! Mullyman “Home To Stay”

Posted by Ms.Tris On June - 16 - 2010

Good Morn All! I’m rolling today, listening to local music, and checkin’ out Drake’s cd. I filmed a wedding with my hybrid cam last weekend in NJ. While editing the photos etc. I am enjoying the time to check out the new ear candy :-)… Drake’s Cd will put an emotional tear in your eye at times, but I think it’s a super release…

Download the latest Mullyman music at

Mullyman and I met back in 2004. He has been on a super grind with his music from then through now. I always love to see him live because his performances are always energetic. In today’s HipHop, it’s hard to find artist in the spotlight who still uses witty punchlines like Mullyman does. Every time we connect, I tell him “call me so we can make something happen”. After talking on twitter yesterday,I think we are finally going to do that this summer.. yaay!

I posted his infamous “I Go Harder” video, which was picked up by MTVJAMS. Well Mullyman and producer Dj BooMan are back with another banger!

Mullyman ” Home To Stay”

Produced by DJ BooMan, Directed by Gearie “The Grench” Bowman,Label: Major League Unlimited

I know I know may think I’m saying this because they are reppin’ Bmore…but you have to admit…THIS IS an Awesome video! :-).
Check out the location, and the concept. I love the wrestling scene…. **pushes play for the 7th time**..nice work to all involved!

How To Set Up A Home Studio

Posted by Ms.Tris On June - 9 - 2010

Is it Wednesday already? “Not” funny how time flies when you are working hard.. lol.. but we must press on. Hope your week is going good and the beats are flamin’!

I was setting up my old pc, new pc, all hardware, and software yesterday. Yes finally linking everything together, which will all be sequenced on NI Maschine. When I start doing things like this, I always wind up changing the lab.

Right now I have everything where I can easily reach it. I plan on moving to a bigger place, and eventually getting a new workstation/desk. When I first started, all I had was an Asr10 and a “gulp” 4 track Tascam recorder. For the past 10 years I’ve added things slowly. I’ve gone to pawn shops, ebay, and any where I could find a deal for hardware. I saved money for software and additions. From my booth to my desk, I used what I could find and afford. Here is a pic of my setup before I began to re-arrange:

I get a lot of questions about what equipment should be purchased to start a home studio. My answer today would be, a very decent pc built for music 1st. Once you invest in the core Pc or Mac for mixing and recording, then venture into other equipment. If you don’t have money to buy a brand new pc, at least invest in a quality soundcard or audio inerface, memory, and external hard drive to hold your files. Unless you plan to use all hardware from start to finish, your Pc or Mac will be the nucleus of your home studio set up.

From here, the choices are many. How much of a budget are you working with? If you have a starting budget of $500.00, you wouldn’t want to run out and buy a $399.00 midi controller. You may want to get:

………..a $37.17 controller,

………… $96.87 monitors,

99.00 mic,

………….and for composing, mixing, recording …

The Fl Studio Producers Edition for $199.00 * + 10% MsTrisMusic discount 🙂

The following videos may help you get an idea of what producers are using. Think about what you want to achieve with your set up. Start with items you can build onto, grow with, and get the equipment that’s best for your budget..

It’s not a hard task to build a home studio once you have a few ideas on how to start…

Circle Of Fifths?

Posted by Ms.Tris On June - 3 - 2010

Here I am at the keyboard. I have been studying music theory for a little over a year. I am beginning to understand scales ,key signatures, and I know some chord progressions. The thing I have the most trouble with is understanding which chord progressions go with which scale… 🙁 ?

I am on a mission this next blog year. I will make it my business to learn theory enough to write a complete song by notes. After doing a little research, I still asked “where should I start?”

right click to download.. I made it for you today 🙂

The Circle of Fifths seems to be the answer everyone is telling me. I should learn how to use this after learning the 12 notes of the chromatic scale. From my understanding it will help me understand how to use” perfect intervals” to write music. Perfect intervals occur when notes are closely related in pitch and tone, which makes them sound good together. The Circle of Fifths is made up of notes which go up or down by perfect fifths (7 half -steps apart)…cool. the following video will help us understand this concept:

Let’s learn together on this. DON’T take this one lightly, take time to really get the concept. It’s starting to come together for me after watching the videos… if you have any questions feel free to ask in the comments section:

Native Instruments Maschine Tutorial 1: Work Flow

Posted by Ms.Tris On June - 2 - 2010

I really didn’t know you all enjoyed the feature this much. 🙂 yaay! Thanks to all who have been participating, and being patient for answers. I will try to log on more for live help.

Also those who followed me on twitter and facebook, hit me up sometimes let’s network…

Unwrapping MASCHINE

I was talking with a “#teammaschine” user who frequents MsTrisMusic.Com. He sparked the fire for me to do my 1st Maschine Tutorial post. Shouts out to @MrIIXI for this one, and the term ” teammaschine” 🙂

If you haven’t had the chance to meet Native Instruments Maschine, the following video will give you the basic idea of what the fuss is about:
NI Maschine: Introduction

I got my Maschine in March. I have been really inspired to work on beats with it. I think I told you I heard about Maschine, then watched a few videos before making a decision to dip into my Roland Fantom money, and purchase one. You can read my introduction to Maschine here: MsTrisMusic NI Maschine.

Out of the box it was easy to get started. If you have used Fl Studio, Reason, Mpc, or other Daws to make beats, Maschine has all the basic features: There is a piano roll, pattern mode, pad mode, step sequencer, and more. The thing that’s a little different is Maschine uses “Scenes” to set up your song. For me, that was the only “uh-oh” moment.

The suggested work flow is to make several patterns, then place them in scenes arranging them how you wish. Sounds easy enough, but when I sat down to make a complete song it took a little thought.

I finally figured out the best and fasted way for me to get started. This tutorial will deal with Maschine Stand Alone installation.( I will do another post later this month with full Reaper routing). I will be using all Maschine included sounds for tutorial purposes. This is not a beat making tutorial, but one showing my way of beat creating, and arranging on Maschine using patterns and scenes

I load up Maschine, and load a drumkit into “Group A (808 Southern Kit)”, and a few sounds into “Group B”;

Next I’ll start with a 8 bar melody or drums in pattern “A1”. The cool thing about Maschine is each kit has some preset patterns to get you working quickly. I like this particular pattern for the 808 Southern kit so I’ll use it to keep rolling with the tutorial. This pattern will go in “Scene 1” :

808 drum pattern
This is 1/2 or 8 bars of verse 1.

Free Drumloops, And Break-Beats

Posted by Ms.Tris On June - 1 - 2010

Digging Digging.. any sample heads out there who just can’t get enough funky breaks? Well, Well, Well!.. I forgot all about the Phat Drum Loops Site. I recently updated my bookmarks and found some gems like these there:

“Jaw Breaks, t4” (74k)
A.B. Skhy, “Trackin’ Shoes” — [Manduro]

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

“Red Hot Beats, t5” (26k)
Brass Ring, “Spinning Wheel” — [ Sureel]

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Most of the loops are lo fi mp2 files. It easy to convert them using an audio editor, as well as eq, filter and slice them. Try loading them into the free Beat Burner Vst for some cool effects.
