Nicki Minaj Pink Friday + Performing w/ Rhianna, and Drake

Posted by Ms.Tris On November - 30 - 2010

Happy Tuesday! How was your holiday week? I had a fun time, and I did not over eat yaay :)…

I had time to really listen to Nicki Minaj’s 1st official release “Pink Friday”. Again Young Money has shocked me. Like Drake, I didn’t expect so much singing from such a witty emcee. Smart move by Lil Wayne signing them. Both Drake and Nicki can sing. I am not mad with the cd at all. It’s been on repeat in the ride since I got it. It’s different, and at times she reminds me somewhat of Busta Ryhmes, when using all the crazy flows.

Preview And Purchase The Album From Amazon

I did notice that Pink Friday incorporates a lot of pop type melodies through out. Heavy use of synths on almost every song. Some of you may wonder how to create the synth sounds heard in tracks like “Moment 4 Life ft Drake”. The sound I’m referring to comes in around 7 secs:
Nicki Minaj Moment 4 Life

Well if you have Reason it can be achieved with the Malstrom or Subtractor. There are even a few free vst instruments that will help you come close like the Ugo Audio Rez2 or Superwave8. For the hardware lovers, the Alesis micron has almost the exact sound used in “Moment 4 Life”.

This is surely a theme song for me, I love uplifting songs that make me feel inspired to keep grinding with the music. I am also loving “Fly” featuring Rhianna. Did Rhi Rhi blaze that hook or what?… Check out some live footage from last Thursdays Thanksgiving show:

O.k. I really want tickets to the show now… 🙂

How To Chop Samples In Logic: Just Blaze

Posted by Ms.Tris On November - 18 - 2010

Happy Happy Thursday! This time next week I will have my apron on being chef :). I know… I know the post have been about once or twice a week. Sometimes I have to remind all that I’m producer first, artist, then blogger lol. I had so many beats to make and mix. This is always a great thing, but it doesn’t leave much time to post :-(.. thanks all who continue to support the site, knowing that I post as much as I can, when I can. Much love to you all for that.

I hadn’t seen this next little tutorial from Just Blaze. I love his production work. Here he gives a quick example of sample chopping using Logic. The techniques he does can most likely be achieved in any Daw that has a ‘slice ” function.

Cool the way he just sliced on the down beats…. I must try that in Reaper 🙂

The video was uploaded by top engineer Mike Chav. His site has mixing info, drum kits and more; Be sure to visit when you have time to look around.

Baltimore Beat Bangers Vol.1

Posted by Ms.Tris On November - 1 - 2010

Good morning all. How was your Halloween weekend? I went to two of my cousins high school football games. Both teams won yaay..and it was good to hang with my family.

I also participated in an all female hiphop panel at Morgan States radio station 88.9. It was so much fun and even more informative. Thanks to Flo and Ahk of Strictly HipHop.

I’m such a beat junkie lol…I’m always listening to beats from various producers. It often motivates me and it’s definitely one of my favorite pastimes.

I told you all about “”. Where you can find tons of hot music to download. Happy to say, Imahj Beats has started the ball rolling for producers.

He’s the mind behind “Baltimore Beat Bangers” which will showcase Baltimore’s hottest producers. Here is the track list for Vol.1 which includes all the producers chosen for the kick off and the tracks they submitted:

(check out new Ms.Tris Beats # 8 The First Time We Met and #21 Get With This 🙂 )

The official cd release party is Nov 11,2010 at Club Reality. Come out and network, meet the producers, and enjoy a great show.

Thanks again Imahj and Billy Lyve for making it happen..

A lot of producers release beat cd’s. This is a wonderful way to get your music out there. Not only do artist get to hear your creations, most begin to freestyle when they hear something they like. This means you have just made a potential customer of your works. This may be something to look into if you are trying to get your beats heard in your area.

George Duke Soul Treasures

Posted by Ms.Tris On October - 28 - 2010

Hey Hey All! What’s Good?… A bunch of happenings going on here. Been in the lab deep lately. I will be posting a few things and new material starting next week. yaay 🙂

I’d say in my first year of making beats with the Asr10, George Duke was my go to musician for a lot of samples. I don’t think anyone outside my family ever heard any of those newbie beats though. ..:) I remember listening to his albums because Sheila E. once played drums for him.
One of my favorite G.Duke songs is “No Rhyme,No Reason”. I just adore the melody in this, and the chord progressions jump right out at you…

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Native Instruments has released George Duke Soul Treasures

Wow a lot of work went into this, I think it’s great that you can even edit the sounds inside Kontakt…(that beat was hot huh?)

For more Information check out:

I’m interested in getting this sometime soon. If you purchase before me, let me hear some of the music you create using it.

Reaper And Maschine Free Template

Posted by Ms.Tris On October - 5 - 2010

Great Morning to ya! Off to the musical races making many beats this week. I’m back at it big time again. I’ll be posting some final songs this fall and winter. Very excited about the projects I have going, having fun with the music yes! 😉

I received an email about Maschine and Reaper. Priych wanted to add more than 8 outs into Reaper. There are a few ways to do this. The easiest way would be to add two instances of Maschine inside Reaper. You could have one for drums, and the other for instruments and percussion.

Another way would require panning the sounds from Maschine to Reaper, duplicating and panning the Reaper Maschine inserts, and recording output as mono. This will allow you to manually split the “8 Maschine Outs” and make them 16. Reaper has many ways of routing. It sounds difficult at first, but once you do it a few times you’ll breeze through. I will try to explain the best I can today. I will do a video later this month.

Insert Maschine with routing to 8 outputs

Duplicate track 1 in Reaper, send 1st two Maschine instruments to EXT Out 1 “panning one left and one right”

Duplicate track 2 in Reaper, send 2nd two Maschine instruments to Ext Out 2 “panning one left and one right”

Once I have panned the instruments inside Maschine, I tell Reaper how to record, and pan the volume slider to correct side left or right:

Be sure to set Reaper to record ” Mono Mix Of Channel”, remember to pan the Reaper Tracks

You could continue to add tracks this way, giving you 16 outs. So your next step would be:
Duplicate Reaper Track 3. Add two more instruments inside Maschine, pan left and right. Set Reaper to record mono mix of channel. Pan the Reaper channels to the left or right. You would then have 6 Maschine instruments going out to 6 Reaper tracks.

If you’d like to add other vst instruments and record them as midi inside Maschine, you will need to send a midi signal from Maschine to the vsti. I will use Reapers included Reasynth.

I add a Reasynth using the “insert Virtual Instrument” command. Next I assign a receive from Maschine Midi channel 1:

Now you can continue to add more vst instruments assigning each to a new midi channel in both Reaper and Maschine. With this set up you can work entirely inside Maschine, then record audio or midi into Reaper or record everything on Reaper tracks. You can even do both if you’d like, it’s up to you.

Once you have a set up that you like, save as a Template. I usually save one for Reaper and one for Maschine.

In the following template, I have set up Maschine routed to Reaper with drums, 3 instruments, and Reasynth.
Group A=
Drums N Percs routed to tracks 2-8
Group B=
3 Instruments and Reasynth routed to tracks 9-12

I used Native Instruments included Maschine sounds. You can replace them with the same sounds, or any sound of your choice. Let me know if this works for you..
