Hello to all..I had a great time with the live help on Friday. I wanted to let you know I’ve gotten several ideas for tutorials, and things some readers want to see. I know how it is to come to a site and want to ask questions, so I’ve made it easy by allowing comments. So far your questions help out a lot, so please feel free to be active with posting ideas etc. I’d really like more input from other producers as well. I believe in networking, so think of it as sharing, and getting some promotion. Please no spam or comments that contain explicit language. Also, remember to subscribe so you’ll know when I add new articles.
Todays 1st post idea came from “The Quick” through the Live Help I.M. He wanted that “Bangladesh- a milli -Shawty Red- Young Jeezy” Booooom usually made from an 808. I thought, I want one too 🙂
I learned about layering kicks years ago, but I was reminded of a technique I completely forgot about. Some producers call it “Tri-Panning” or Tri-Layer”. To achieve it you load 3 of the same kick into your software or hardware sampler, pan one all the way left, pan one all the way right, and leave one in the middle. Have all three triggered at the same time.
What’s up to all this morning?…hope you are preparing to work on some hits. I’ve been up early, and I’m starting on a new beat. I was fiddling with the malstrom, trying to come up with a new sound. I thought, great idea for a post ,and a good time for a couple free sounds, freshly crafted. 🙂 This isn’t a tutorial, but some tips from me to you.
This is my starting idea for the beat…”Sept Crunk Beat2 Start”
I am using Reason, but the same techniques can be used in Fl Studio, or hardware
The quick arrangement goes something like this:
I started with strings for the chord progression F, Gm, and Am
I’ve tweaked my kick changing the pitch and layering 2,(using two different kicks instead of one)
Loaded a clap, and a snare and changed the pitch on each, and layered them as well.
Next I loaded up two “Malstrom” synth modules for a Synth type bass line and melody.
Last I added a piano for more variation.
The piano and strings are Reason factory sounds, every thing else I tweaked using the knobs on the sound modules and redrum. This is a major plus when using software synths and vst instruments. You can tweak the parameters to come up with unique sounds. The help files and manuals are your friend when it comes to adjusting the presets or starting from scratch.
In the picture above I have placed arrows on the various areas I tweaked to make my bass type synth, and melody sounds. For the drums, again, I ” twisted the knobs” on the Redrum to change the “pitch”.
“Sept Crunk Beat 2 Start” Bass line,Melody, and Drums that I tweaked
You’ll hear that my sounds are similar to those used in today’s “pop/crunk” style hip hop, yet different. The kick sounds more like a “drum-n- bass” style kick, the snare clap mix is odd, and the synths are zoid like. The Neptunes are famous for tweaking sounds, a long with many producers of techno, and house music. It has become more and more popular in hip hop when making the “dirty south” style beats.
Get creative with it. Some soft synths allow you to load your own wav files. You could record yourself humming a note, load that into your production software/hardware, tweak it, and use your voice as an instrument. Sound design is an extensive subject, but you can start today by twisting and tweaking the many knobs….
Here is the mini kit from the beat above including that new crazy kick …enjoy and Happy Beat Making..

Got an email requesting all the good stuff for crunk beats. Pianos, strings, horns, and effects. Juv(hope you don’t mind the nickname 🙂 ).. wanted to know some good sound modules and vst instruments…
The most popular sound modules are the Yamaha, Roland, and Korg for Hip Hop. You can find them at your local Guitar Center and several online music stores like ZZounds.
I am really looking into the Roland Fantom for my main workstation, but I bought the Yamaha Motif es rack about a year ago. The Motif is a wonderful choice, and I know all of the above are great.
Before I ever thought I could afford the Motif, lol , I relied on soundfonts. They are basically a collection of sounds that you use in a soundfont player. You can read the full history on Wiki,Wikipedia Soundfont Info. As with most sound kits or wavs, you’ll have to spend a few bucks for the high quality banks. There are also several free soundfont banks online. I’ve posted some of my favorites in the Links To Free Stuff Post.
Sf2midi has soooo many to choose from… The free soundfonts usually need some tweaking as far as eq, but they will surely get you started. Read the rest of this entry »
G.Diesel asked me where I got my sounds and patches, I told him I’d post some links. Here is a list of some great free sound and vst sites to get you started. I will add to this list often. ** Always remember to read liscense agreements and disclaimers, also be courteous 😉 …buy from, or donate to the sites you appreciate**
I was officially done posting today, but I had to come back one more again. AJ Rok Woodson hit me with an interesting email:
This email was inspired by what i saw last night on Hip Hop Vs America on BET.
We are quick to talk about and complain about what’s wrong with hip-hop, about the lyrics and images that are being force fed to out youth, to our young sisters.
We are quick to forward every email about R Kelly, Don Imus and anything else that negative, but rarely do we do anything about it. Conversation is good but its only a start.
I am doin promotions for a Atlanta based rap group called Vintage Imperial, they have a new record called GIRLS ROCK TOO!
Now I challenge everyone, especially my sistahs who are tired or the negative portrayal of females in hip-hop.
Listen to this records, if ya feel it, forward to all your people, post this track on your myspace pages, your blogs, your black planet pages, your websites, put in on ya mp3 player, burn to a cd and play in ya cars, play it for ya daughters and ya sons for that matter
Artists like these don’t receive love for commercial radio and entities like BET and MTV. These records don’t get written about in your major newspapers or magazines like Ebony, Jet, and Essence. So rarely do you know they exist. Today is your chance to change that.
So we are goin to by past the commercial radio stations, BET and other entities that
keep feeding our kids the poison, and go straight to the people. Enuf people feel this and talk about this and post this and play this, the radio must step up to the plate.
While this is not ya traditional way or working a record, traditional ways arent working anymore.
“When you do the common things in life in an uncommon way,
you will command the attention of the world.”
– Dr. George Washington Carver
Now I know this will not single-handedly change the face of hip-hop by itself, but neither does sitting around the water cooler or wherever complaining about it. But until we let the world know these kind of records exist, until we let them know there is real hip hop out there we cant expect people to play or request these songs. So I am on a mission to get the word out by any means necessary and the same way we forward emails with negative news to everyone in our address books, I challenge you to do the same with this email.
help spread the word. Lets stop saying what’s bad and show the world what’s good.

A Happy Friday to you, and I hope all is well. Free on Friday sounds like a winner.
Reverberation or reverb, is the acoustic atmosphere of a sound wave. Imagine standing in the center of an empty pool and yelling at the top of your lungs. The sound would bounce off the walls of the pool causing echoes. This series of echoes are the ingredients that make up reverb. In the natural world, there are many things that effect a sounds acoustics / the degree of sound emitted by a transducer. Hardware and software reverb are used to emulate the different acoustic atmospheres electronically.
One of the aspirations of top sound engineers is to reproduce sound that is as close to natural as possible. In major studios, many things are used to effect the sound wave. I am sure you have used, heard or have seen the acoustic foam covering walls in music studios. This helps control the rooms accoustics and reverb.Take away that foam, and the room is similar to the empty pool. The sound would bounce off the walls causing more echoes. The foam actually reduces this amount of echoes by absorbing the sound wave; it effects the reverb.
With the advance of technology, we are able to closely recreate proper acoustical environments for our sounds waves. A lot of times you will see names like ” Hall, chamber, studio, plate, and even bedroom, or basement” as settings for reverb effects. Now you have a better idea of what those settings mean. If I am adding reverb to some plush orchestra strings, I would start with ‘hall’ or ‘chamber’ because this is the most common acoustic environment strings are recorded in. If I want to add reverb to a vocal, I’d probably start with ‘studio’ because…..yup..most vocals are recorded in a studio environment.
Dive deep into manuals when using effects, and you will be sure you are starting at the right place. You’ll have to keep in mind, escpecialy with reverb, you are recreating the acoustic environment. If you are mixing down your BIG Booooooom 808 kick, which is a synthesized sound., you won’t want to add a “chamber” reverb because you may have a “chamber” of a mess. Unless you are going for something extra, most drums would use a preset of plate, short for ‘drum plate”
Head on over to the official site.. let them know you love it. They have some other interesting vst effects for a reasonable price. I’m heading back now to see if I need anything… SinusWeb.de
Please remember that the freebies may work perfect for you, “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” :-)….. but there are tons of high quality effect units and vsts. So save your dollars, read up, and when you are ready…. you’ve practiced with the free effects, so you’ll have a basic foundation when you purchase your top dollar additions.
