The most popular sound modules are the Yamaha, Roland, and Korg for Hip Hop. You can find them at your local Guitar Center and several online music stores like ZZounds.
I am really looking into the Roland Fantom for my main workstation, but I bought the Yamaha Motif es rack about a year ago. The Motif is a wonderful choice, and I know all of the above are great.
Before I ever thought I could afford the Motif, lol , I relied on soundfonts. They are basically a collection of sounds that you use in a soundfont player. You can read the full history on Wiki,Wikipedia Soundfont Info. As with most sound kits or wavs, you’ll have to spend a few bucks for the high quality banks. There are also several free soundfont banks online. I’ve posted some of my favorites in the Links To Free Stuff Post.
Sf2midi has soooo many to choose from… The free soundfonts usually need some tweaking as far as eq, but they will surely get you started. Read the rest of this entry »

We are quick to talk about and complain about what’s wrong with hip-hop, about the lyrics and images that are being force fed to out youth, to our young sisters.
We are quick to forward every email about R Kelly, Don Imus and anything else that negative, but rarely do we do anything about it. Conversation is good but its only a start.
I am doin promotions for a Atlanta based rap group called Vintage Imperial, they have a new record called GIRLS ROCK TOO!
Now I challenge everyone, especially my sistahs who are tired or the negative portrayal of females in hip-hop.

Artists like these don’t receive love for commercial radio and entities like BET and MTV. These records don’t get written about in your major newspapers or magazines like Ebony, Jet, and Essence. So rarely do you know they exist. Today is your chance to change that.
So we are goin to by past the commercial radio stations, BET and other entities that
keep feeding our kids the poison, and go straight to the people. Enuf people feel this and talk about this and post this and play this, the radio must step up to the plate.

Now I know this will not single-handedly change the face of hip-hop by itself, but neither does sitting around the water cooler or wherever complaining about it. But until we let the world know these kind of records exist, until we let them know there is real hip hop out there we cant expect people to play or request these songs. So I am on a mission to get the word out by any means necessary and the same way we forward emails with negative news to everyone in our address books, I challenge you to do the same with this email.

Reverberation or reverb, is the acoustic atmosphere of a sound wave. Imagine standing in the center of an empty pool and yelling at the top of your lungs. The sound would bounce off the walls of the pool causing echoes. This series of echoes are the ingredients that make up reverb. In the natural world, there are many things that effect a sounds acoustics / the degree of sound emitted by a transducer. Hardware and software reverb are used to emulate the different acoustic atmospheres electronically.
One of the aspirations of top sound engineers is to reproduce sound that is as close to natural as possible. In major studios, many things are used to effect the sound wave. I am sure you have used, heard or have seen the acoustic foam covering walls in music studios. This helps control the rooms accoustics and reverb.Take away that foam, and the room is similar to the empty pool. The sound would bounce off the walls causing more echoes. The foam actually reduces this amount of echoes by absorbing the sound wave; it effects the reverb.
With the advance of technology, we are able to closely recreate proper acoustical environments for our sounds waves. A lot of times you will see names like ” Hall, chamber, studio, plate, and even bedroom, or basement” as settings for reverb effects. Now you have a better idea of what those settings mean. If I am adding reverb to some plush orchestra strings, I would start with ‘hall’ or ‘chamber’ because this is the most common acoustic environment strings are recorded in. If I want to add reverb to a vocal, I’d probably start with ‘studio’ because…..yup..most vocals are recorded in a studio environment.
Dive deep into manuals when using effects, and you will be sure you are starting at the right place. You’ll have to keep in mind, escpecialy with reverb, you are recreating the acoustic environment. If you are mixing down your BIG Booooooom 808 kick, which is a synthesized sound., you won’t want to add a “chamber” reverb because you may have a “chamber” of a mess. Unless you are going for something extra,most drums would use a preset of plate, short for ‘drum plate”

So save your dollars, read up, and when you are ready…. you’ve practiced with the free effects, so you’ll have a basic foundation when you purchase your top dollar additions.

I decided to post up my infamous No Air snare kit. This was made back in 2004. Alot of producers are using it. The idea was to have a crisp snare kit deleting all the air/noise at the end of the wav file, adding a lil eq and volume boosting.
