Suggested Reading:How To Read Music

Posted by Ms.Tris On July - 29 - 2010

I am sitting here in awe. I’ve had this book for over a year and finally picked it up again last Sunday. It is written so clear and I honestly learned to read a basic melody in a couple hours.

Looking at music scores has been the same as looking at foreign language for me. I learned a tiny bit of notation when I was in grade school. After a while I just got off the path and into other things. Since I started the site, I have been studying theory much more. I’ve been learning scales, notes, chords, and key signatures. I haven’t learned to read them on a “stave” (the sets of lines where music is written).

I try to explain what I am learning; here, in a way easy to understand. I also share the books and sites I use most. Most of what I’ve shared so far, only uses the alphabetical letters to write or read music. This is cool, but it really relies on memory or having to have references available. Now that I know some music theory basics, it’s time to take it to the next level, (which should have been the first level). It’s time to “read” and understand all the things mentioned above by learning music notation.

If you have the opportunity, remember it’s best to take a few courses on theory. If you are new to music theory, music notation is the way to start. I skipped around notation for many years, and my musical journey has taken me back.

This book cost around 10 bucks, and you can get from the MsTrisMusic Amazon Store:

Hundreds of athletes get motivated and pumped up before they make an entrance to the field, arena, or court. You’ve seen them in their huddles, or coming into the ring doing all kinds of little rituals. Have you ever noticed how many of the routines are done to music?

I often do the same thing when I’m starting a beat. Yesterday I sat down to make a track with a dirty south feel, and winded up doing a smooth R&B composition. I had every intention on making some rolling snares and boomy 808 drums. When I started the beat at the end of a long day, I just wasn’t in a “mind state” for a hard core hip hop session.

Although I’m prepared now, this morning I felt like cleaning instead of working. I’m sure many of you go through times when you just don’t feel like it. This is when you have get yourself motivated like the athletes. When I need to get in a certain mood, I listen to songs or watch videos that give certain emotional spark. Since I haven’t been doing many hard hitting sample beats this month, I went straight to a few Mpc videos on youtube.

This was posted by moneyhungryradio.com about a year ago. It’s the initial video that got Araab his internet buzz. Today was my first time watching, and he’s definitely an mpc power user…

After watching this I am totally in the mood to do some chopping, and I’m now a fan of Araab :)

I know, I know :) …Dude is sick with the mpc right?…..

Please Vote For: A Beautiful Day

Posted by Ms.Tris On July - 21 - 2010

Hey Hey all please vote for my cousins in the Six Flags Contest :) they are out to become the next pop stars. This tune was written the last day of entry and made the cut.
They have been singing since they were tiny tots. We lost their mother, and my aunt Cheryl in 2003. I am viewing in tears of joy, seeing God’s work and creativity passed on to them. I know she is smiling in heaven as I am now…way to go girls! This really has inspired me to see a” Beautiful Day”

It only takes a second to vote, no sign ups or anything..here is the direct link:

Hey You! What’s happening? Hope all is well on your end. It’s Wednesday already, the week is rolling by fast. I woke up this morning wanting to play PS3. You know I can’t do that with all the beats I have to make lol…pressing on… pressing on :) ..

Woo Wee have I found a treasure for any Fl Studio users. ste1438 has taken tons of hours to create some of the most helpful Fl Studio videos I’ve seen on the net. There is something here for everyone as the title describes, Beginner To Pro!

I watched a couple, and although I consider myself an advanced Fl user, I learned something even in tutorial 1. They all are at least 20 minutes long. I bookmarked the page so I can go back when I have time. Here are the first and last that he’s posted so far:

Ni Maschine Meets Progressive Hip Hop: Mr.Invisible

Posted by Ms.Tris On July - 16 - 2010

Hey Hey what’s good with you?… It’s Friiidaaay! Woo hoo.. but my weekend won’t start until later, I’m still over here working on a few things :)

You all know I am officially a “Maschine-Head”, it’s still fairly fresh on the scene, so there aren’t tons of videos out yet. Native Instruments released two yesterday. Both are from “Mr. Invisible” a progressive hip hop trio: Two emcees; Ill-use and Justin Aswell (both are producers), and a DJ; Marley. It’s my first time hearing about them so I’m gonna check them out on myspace in a few.

This is real cool… the tag team beat making is my favorite part… They are actually using two Maschine consoles for this shoot.
