Reason 4.0 Dirty South Tutorial 2: Part 2

Posted by Ms.Tris On June - 1 - 2009

Hey All hope you are ” Super Charged” today 🙂 **that’s my new theme..Super Charged!**
I am having some technical difficulties with my windows “systemsnd32”..for some reason I cant adjust the volume for my system, so the volume may be very low on tutorial files 🙁 if anyone knows how to fix this please drop me a comment below Thanks…

…..Lets get right back to work..

Yesterday we stopped with a 8 bar loop of a simple dirty south pattern and short chord progression. We are using an Em chord prog:
Em l F l G l Am
EGB FAC GBD ACE:

I forgot to mention that the chords are played using the “THOR-point of no return[run] patch” I turned off the run/sequence in the editor, and used my midi keyboard to play the notes…

We have a very basic foundation for our composed beat. For the tutorial snippet above, I used G and F chords just to give an example.

Today I will expand the progression using all 4 chords posted. I deleted the example progression, and left my drum pattern as is for now.

removed-chords

This leaves me with an open 8 bar drum loop to play a more advanced chord progression. *note: I normally play 4-8 at the start of the song. Sometimes I start with drums other times I start with chords. The choice is up to you, there are no set rules.*

Lets review:
73bpm and Time signature 4/4
Step 1: Add 2 bars of hihats: open piano roll and add hats using 1/32 time signature.

Step 2: Add 2 bars of drums (kicks snares)
or
Step 2: Add 2 bars of chords
For Step 2 we play along to the metronome/click track instead of our 1/32 hihats
Copy and paste the 2 bars, 3 times to give me 8 bars

I decided to go with Step1: hihats, Step 2 drum pattern, < copy and paste>
Step 3:Add chords…

My Chord Progression for Verse 1, 1st 8 bars: I just played the progression to get my ideas down. I haven’t fixed any off notes yet… Can you guess which chord I started with?

Add starting chord progression

Step 4 is another with many options.
a.I could continue to build my verses and hook using chord progressions

b.I could start building up my drum pattern for verse one

c.I could start adding my melody

d.I could start adding a bassline…

Todays Step 4:a. continue building song with chord progression
I copy my drum pattern to extend to 16 bars, leaving room for chord progression with variation.

5-slight-changes

I added a second chord progression using the same chords with slight variation. I now have a 16 bar pattern with progressions that can be used for all my verses If I choose:

verses

Verse1 Chords

I copy my drum pattern again leaving room for my hook chord progression. I know have 16 bar verse and 8 bar hook. I add new progression with variations for hook. Here is where you can be a little more creative with the chords. You can change the starting chord or make drastic changes to how you play the chords.
Here is what I came up with:

Verse and Hook Chords

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Step 5
More choices:
a. add a melody
b. add a bassline
c. begin adding changes to drum patterns

I’m choosing
Step 5: C. begin adding changes to drum patterns.

There are no set rules to why I chose to start changing drums now. I do find that making adjustments here helps guide my melody.

I want my drums to have breaks and changes at the ends of each section of 8 bars. I will also add some percussion to liven up my drum pattern. Within each 8 bar section I’ll make variations of the kick and snare. I may also add claps starting at bar 9-24. Be creative here, especially with hook drum pattern..drums help drive dirty south beats almost as much as the melody…

Although this is not mixed, nor quantized, I have a very good foundation of my composed dirty south beat. ( I turned down the chords so you can hear the drum change ideas..sorry if the volume is low due to tech problems)

Step 6:Add melody

Keeping along with the steps taken in this tutorial I will work on my melody next. ** Chord progressions are free for everyone to use BUT MELODIES ARE NOT** Don’t copy anyones melodies without permission or you risk copyright infringement…

I add the melody using “NNXT-Syn Strings”. After I do an 8 bar melody, I change it for variation 9-16, then a dramatic change for hook 16-24.
I still need to adjust some notes, and mix.. at this point an artist could actually rap to this…

    Hey MisTris,

for ya Tech problem, ya should try to solve it with your windows CD…just restart windows with the Cd and instead of installing it new, chose repair. I think that thing that is missing is a windows file…..so it should solve it.

    anyway thanx for your help!
