Fl Studio 8 Tutorial:Kick Tweaking 1 Basics (with files)

Posted by Ms.Tris On March - 3 - 2009

What’s up all.. it is super cold here on the eastcoast..bundle up well if you have to go out!~

I had a wonderful time at the battle last Thursday. The final round beats went well. I am offering the winner the one he had the victory over, and I sold one of the others..great! The third I’m uploading for a free download..(please read agreement). I didn’t have time to mix them like I wanted. Which would involve ” tracking each instrument out and doing a final mix in Reaper“. I did try..lol… a few times actually, but winded up going back to the origional versions. I just wasn’t feeling the mix, maybe I was rushing who knows. The kicks were still knocking hard over the club system. A couple producers came up and asked me “What are you using now?” You all know I use both software and hardware..but the beats I played that night, 1 was straight from Fl Studio rough mix and the other 2 straight from the mpc2500 rough mix. No one knew which one came from what…lol what is your guess??

.. which leads us to today’s tutorial 🙂

I must make this statement: I normally don’t use stock sounds. In order to make it easy to follow tutorials, I try to use sounds that everyone should have with the program. This way it’s easy for everyone to do hands on work when going through the tutorials using the same sounds…cool

As a pre production method you will want your kicks to knock as hard as possible within your workstation or software. Quality sound samples are the best way to go. I’ve done a few post on knocking kicks, this one will break down my method in Fl Studio using stock sounds. Once you get the hang of it you’ll find it works well on most kicks that need help…

1st Step: Make a basic drum pattern using stock sounds from Fl Studio HipHop pack:

Hip_Kick_8
Hip_Kick_7
Hip_snare_3
Hip_Hat_5

Basic pattern; Kick Snare Hat 90 Bpm No effect on Kick

Step 2: Send Hip_Kick_8 and Hip_Kick_7 to Channel 1 In Mixer

Step 3: Turn Hip_Kick_7 down slightly

Step4: Adjust low and mid frequency on mixer channel 1
Again this step is from none other than NFX over at Warbeats.Com. This is my starting point on every kick. I even use this technique on all hardware, and other software.

Step 5: Add Fruity Multiband Compressor and Fruity Soft Clipper To fx Inserts On Channel1

You can start with a preset and begin tweaking your kicks. I suggest using presets until you know what turning knobs will effect. The presets often work fine with quality instrument samples. Eventually you’ll begin to make your own presets and begin using them instead.

On the multiband I like ” Crazy Bass” or “Bass Boost” settings for my kicks. You’ll be able to hear the difference just by going through a few of the presets. Next, adjust the Fruity Soft Clipper to ensure no clipping. You may have to lower the volume on mixer channel 1 to avoid clipping also. You will begin to hear more warmth and knock at this point.

The next pictures shows all my initial adjustments mentioned in steps 4 and 5

Step 6: Add other effects ..EQ, Bass Boost etc. if needed
The final step is to add any final effects to your liking. You may want to boost more frequencies using parametric eq. You may want to add more bass using ” Bass Boost”. There are several options. It’s ok to start here if you will be mixing in other software. If you are mixing inside Fl Studio here are some examples of what you may add. I’ll put both vesions so you can go back and forth to hear the difference..

Here is the one I’ll use for a beat as soon as I post this.. I’ve also included the FLP zip. I added a little reverb to the snare, and cut some lows and mids from the hats. It’s made from stock sounds but it came out pretty nice:-)

I have always put off playing with this program cause I have a friend who is light years ahead of me and everything he makes sounds slammin’ in my car. This tutorial has given me hope. I am a n00b when it comes to music. I just know…. “I LOVE BASS!”. It’s not a stretch to say that as far as beats go, the name says it all; DJ ‘Magic’ Mike… its like MAGIC. If you have any more you could tell me about Making BASS, I would greatly appreciate it. Gonna try that Multiband on the kicks like in that last picture. At least I think I am. Thank you for all the help you have given already and for what I know, from this site, you plan on giving in the future. Wish me luck!!!

  5. Ms.Tris says:

Hey Matt H.. Happy that the tutorial helped. Fl Studio has great mixing capabilities once you learn the mixer…take care and thanks for commenting

  6. Ms.Tris says:

Joe G yes this technique can assist in getting that bass. Most of the time producers will layer a “Sub bass” sound with the kick drum, then tweak it like this… Let me know if you need a bassy kick I’ll upload it..
