Reason 4.0 Dirty South Tutorial: Advanced

Posted by Ms.Tris On December - 11 - 2008

What a day I’ve been having.. ..geesh.. lol…… I had no net connection because Comcast acts up sometimes when it’s raining in my area…. I’m really not into this version of Reason so this tutorial took waaaaaaaaay longer than I thought…..my 12:00pm didn’t show…blah blah and blah

but…. I’m back up and running…yaaay *wipes * brow

Finally, for all the Reason 4 users; The 1st Dirty South tutorial. This actually brings a lot of the beat making post together. I have covered many things on the site. You have lessons on chord progressions, drum tweaking, and 808 snare rolls. There is also a Reason start up post. I won’t be going over how to add the modules today, it will be all about the beat and how I am going about making it.

I mentioned yesterday how I have saved a start up template for Reason projects using Redrum and effects for that unit only. Although there is no set way to start a track. I will be starting with the drums which seems to be an easy way to begin.

I have my redrum outputs routed to mixer 2. Now I will load a nnxt into an empty channel on mixer2 for the kick. This will allow me to easily do tricks with the pitch and octaves because I can extend the wav across the keyboard.

I usually use my drumkit “The Ms.Tris Mighty Drumkit” (**shameless Plug** 🙂 )..or other drums I’ve purchased. I will use only preset sounds included in Reason for this tutorial. If you have Reason 4, then you have all the sounds I’m using . The only extra sound is an 808 snr which I have included as a download. For all Fl Studio users who are following this tutorial, you will have to subtitute with sample wavs, vsti, or soundfonts, but you will get an idea for instruments and how to start your beat.

The Set Up

Kicks Used In NNXT Straight From The Reason Soundbank:

Club House Dub Samples: Kick1 for a “knock”

01_Bass Drum Bd_Boomer.aif for the “boom”

01_Bass Drum Bd_Conga.aif for the ” additional knock”

I layer the 3 kicks

Here is the kick I came up with:right click to download

mskick1

HiHat used in Redrum from Reason Sounbank:

Hh_Dubfire

Snare used in Redrum: right click to download

08snr1

Next onto to modules for a few of my other sounds: Remember only drums are loaded into mixer 2 all of my other sounds will go in Mixer 1 channels…

I add a Malstrom for the 1st synth “Lil John Lead” in MIXER 1 channel 1

A Subtractor for a bassline “BacklashBass” in Mixer 1 Channel 2

3 more NNXT in Mixer 1 channels 3-5 for additional sounds. I added “Strings Orch, Organ B3 and Polyfusion II” All of these are from the Reason Soundbank

Now we have some basic instruments to start with. You will hear in my music where I tweak all preset sounds. I may add a flanger, or distortion etc. I’ll make the beat without any changes, then load my final creation with my changes for a free promotional download. I won’t tell you exactly how I changed every sound because I really want all of you to get used to making the presets your own..be creative and try something new..twist the knobs and have fun.

The Chord Progression For Today
: Diatonic Triads made from the C Major Scale

Very easy to play with 3 fingers and great for Dirty South like you hear on the radio

C Dm Em F G Am B C

Let The Beat Begin!!!

Step1:
Tempo is set to75 bpm. I draw in a 4 bar hihat pattern, and begin to play a kick and snare with my midi controller.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Step2:
My drum pattern is my foundation, now I can play a chord progression using 3 chords from the C major Scale…. hmmn lets try .. Dm C F

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Step 3:

Alright I’m off to an ok start, my tempo doesn’t sound right though. I’ll adjust tempo. I listen to what sounds good and settle at 84 bpm. I fix a few notes, not all of them because I just want to get my ideas down. Next I will use a synth and come up with my main melody. I haven’t given the notes I’m using for my melody..why?..Yeah you are right! That’s the part that’s mine and the part where copyright infringement steps in. Remember NEVER copy melodies for your compositions. Chord progression you can use along with YOUR melody. Heres my 1st one:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Step4:

I begin to play around with some extra snares and snare rolls. This is basically to give myself a guideline to where I may want some major snare action. You can use the same snare in different redrum channels and adjust the pitch to do a roll like this: I did it really slow so you can hear the different pitches used

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Same 808 Snare in Redrum channels adjusted the pitch settings

Now you can hear how the beat is coming together. Although some of the snares, and notes are off, basic placements spots for snare rolls are there for my guideline.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Step5
:

I copy what I have to extend it to 16 bars:

I begin adding more instruments …maybe a bassline or something to give the beat a variation and change…

I continue to build onto the beat idea until I have the basic verse hook pattern.

The foundation to build on and tweak:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Step 7:this step will continue tomorrow with the finished beat
Basically I will begin to align my notes that are off, fix my snare rolls, and begin tweaking and arranging or adding a few more harmony lines. I may change some melodies each verse or change the bassline etc. This is where I fix my drum patterns to go along with my arrangement. For the hook I will have to make sure the change stands out from the verses, but fits with the groove of the song.

As much as I’d like to finish this today, I have to prepare for my evening session.
I hope this gets you going in Reason 4.0 for your dirty south crunk Jeezy Weezy bangers …
I’ll pick up tomorrow probably late afternoon, after I fix what needs fixing ….

Happy Beat Making

  1. Cool tutorial man though the 808 style kick sounds like it could do with some more compression. But maybe thats just me?

Whats up and thanks for commenting..well of course it does ..thats a good ear..
The kick isn’t really an 808 kick. I stated that I used factory sounds for this tutorial so that everyone would have the sounds. I never use them for my beats normally. However, with a proper mix even this kick will sound good which I’ll demonstrate in the finished beat..

    My Problem and Solution

MsTris, nice trick for the kick in NNXT, but i want to address 2 things. First, I added the 3 kicks and then tried tweaking’em individually, but it tweaked them as 1 unit. For example, When i click to tweak the 2nd kick and tweak it, it would erase my prior tweak to the 1st kick and replace it.
Second, id like to add a trick i learned about layering kicks. Here is how to do it: load up to kicks in redrum. lets say in channels 1 and 2. Now to layer them, you want to look in the back of redrum and connect channel 1 gate out to channel 2 gate in. thats all folks!

Hey Thanks alot man…I don’t know if you saw where i answered your other comment.. I remember you from yahoo groups..when I was living Colorado a few years ago. You always had some music things going so Thank You for inspiring me back then..stay in touch!~

  6. Ms.Tris says:

Hey Maurstu04 thats a good way to layer kicks.. I think I saw that one on Calebs youtube too…I haven’t tried it yet but I will…

I will answer the first part of the comment in todays post… stay up and keep makin that heat..
